Is it available to play today? I haven't play CS1.6 in about 6 months and I am out of the loop.

What is the deal with Source? Is it only obtained through Steam? Pay for it with Credit Card? Do you need HL2 to play it? Is it stand alone? I am at work, and Websense is blocking all "gaming" sites.

CS:Source is the official multiplayer game for HL2.

For now, it is only obtainable through Steam. To get it, you simply pre-order HL2 over Steam.

Also, when you pre-order it from Valve, do they send you the retail package? And can you play it without the CD? (Downloaded through Steam?)

Can you play all the new HL2 stuff just through Steam downloads? (I heard that HL2 is already downloaded to people's PCs, but it is encrypted)

From what I understand Steam is both the delivery mechanism and the network client in one. You download games such as source before you play but messing around with DoD, it seemed to do most of everything live over the net. THen again, I don't think you need to be online to play unless it is a multiplayer game or it needs to check for updates.x

I don't believe you get any retail materials besides the extras they mention. I just got it so don't rely on that.

I bought the "gold" pack and it jsut asked me for my info and CC info, I paid, and a few minutes later I was playing. I was going to tell it to preload all the games on my machine but that required 8GB:Q I already partitioned my C: drive to 30GB due to games, and appearantly I'll have to do it again as I only have 5GB free on that one.

The whole steam thing does have its benefits though. Everytime I buy a damn game I have to spend a long time scouring the net for patches and no-cd mods etc...annoying as hell.

I bought gold and do not regret it, I love half life and Counter-Strike :) CS Source takes about 25-40 minutes depending on how congested your b/w is (I'm on RR too) It's awesome but make sure you have a good pc :)

Has anyone tried Half-Life:Source yet? I'm wondering if it's worth putting down all the extra money on it.

What about a Radeon 9700 Pro, Athlon 1900+ and 512mb Mushkin PC2100? Think it will run decently at least?

Yeah it should do decent at lower resolutions, if you're unhappy with the perf. you can always turn some details down. FYI: cl_smooth "0" in console gets rid of massive stuttering for me (I have a 6800u) I don't know if it's a bug with geforces or what but the game felt horrible before turning that off, now it runs fairly well, but I play at 1600x1200 8xaf because my lcds native resolution is 16x12. Your cpu might hinder you a bit, but I haven't really seen a processor comparison for the Source engine yet. When some heavy physics stuff happens the game does chug, even if you're nowhere near the place that it happened! Seems silly to me :p

I played all yesterday after work. I like it but it isn't quite as bug free / glitchy / laggy as CS 1.6. I'm sure after some system upgrades and a patch or 2, it will be great.
