Ready to buy new monitor

Wanting a min of 20" screen that must be a excellent gamer, larger the better but it needs to be fast, with good color/contrast. LCD seems to have lots of trade-offs to get one or the other.

Higher end CRT's seem to have always been ideal, so I am ok with the idea of still using them (I have a 7+ year old 19" Trinitron at the moment). Desk space is not a problem. In my quest for a monitor, I have come across this model:

http://www.viewsonic.com/products/deskt...lays/crtmonitors/graphicseries/g225fb/

Seems like a nice model, but wanting others opinions of it. The price is right, can be had for about $450 shipped.

I assume that with a new video card upgrade (one with DVI only), using the DVI/D-Sub adapter would not hurt performance? Correct???

Thanks for any opinions.

Thanks. It seems the Viewsonic has better resolution abilities though. With the viewing size, warranty & cost the same...on paper it still looks like the Viewsonic is a better buy. (on paper of course). Any reason you recommended this (you have one?). Seems AFTER you buy something, you ALWAYS find out that the one you did not buy would have been better. I just want to make sure I don't miss out on a better monitor for what I am looking for, gaming a must-of course web surfing, and sometimes watching movies will be done also. The price of $450 is not critical, I can spend as much as $800-but not going to if it the extra $$$ is not worth the little performance improvement.

Viewsonic=2048x1536 resolution at 80Hz.

Samsung=1280 x 1024 @ 80 Hz (maximum)

Another option for your consideration. As a user of a VisionMaster 450 for 8+ years, I would have been thrilled to death to have found this unit before I gave up and went LCD. Iiyamas have bandwidth galore; if specs are your thing, read through the list. I'm sure you realize, though, that even if a monitor *will* operate at some fantastic resolution/refresh rate, that upper end is normally not optimal, especially when reading small text, etc.

investing in crt at this point is a waste. lcd tradeoffs have gotten to the point where a good panel is more than good enough for all but the most anal. and well its a strange kinda anal that ignores the inherent weaknesses of crt like size/toxicity on disposal/energy use/eye strain/fading with age etc

Right, don't buy what you want. Buy what we want you to have.

If the guy wants a CRT, he should have one. Not everyone loves LCDs or wants to spend the money to acquire a good one (for photo/color critical work, for example).

CRT resolution options are far greater than their LCD brothers. CRTs have much greater viewing angles and guess what... never a dead or stuck pixel. 😛
As long as you don't mind the size and extra heat, a CRT is a great choice.

I'd go for the CRT. I'm with you completely, just can't bite the bullet for LCD. Don't see the value in it. I work on LCDs at work but...meh....I love my dual 19" CRTs at home. Go for the CRT....you can rest assured that the CRT is better (no LCD is better than a decent CRT in my opinion).

If I didnt have to pay for electricity I would have stuck with CRTs. I got rid of them because they suck so much juice and with all of my PCs plus my sons, well, $$$ was an issue. DVDs look much better on a good crt than an LCD.

Get this monitor. I'm telling you, you'll never miss your CRT. 😉 It has all the positive points of CRTs and LCDs combined. And this is coming from a guy with a Sony G500 monitor.

This LCD is also getting great reviews. If the first LCD is too expensive for you, this one should fit the bill nicely. It's also cheaper than the CRT you are considering.

I know it's over $200 more, but how does the 21 inch widescreen Gateway LCD compare to that Viewsonic, in terms of picture quality for things such as dvd and hdtv, and then for gaming?

Thanks to all for their input. Jack, I have looked at the two you mentioned, mostly because they were the 20" LCD's listed in the "gaming" list of recommended monitors. The NEC for $650, while not out of my overall price range, seems steep for a 20" even considering its gaming ability. The $350 Viewsonic is priced right for a 20" and seems to be better than the average for gaming. $650-$800 would not be a issue to spend for a 23-24" screen if it was fast enough for gaming, but I can't talk myself into spending that much for a 20" screen. The $350 Viewsonic was what I was going to go with until I stumbled on the NEC 21" CRT for $450-my thought was the same viewing size but better performance for only $100 more. Assuming it would have better performance, picture, etc. I figured I would post here to get some feed back on the idea. Also, any comments on the DVI/D Sub adapter effecting performance?

More comments are welcome, and again thanks to all for commenting.

IBM P275 Trinitron, nice specs. Free shipping too.

Cool, the IBM has DVI input too. I just got this LCD the other day Link, is my first time owning an LCD monitor. Even with this monitor's 5ms response time, and overall nice specs, I'm still noticing ghosting in Quake 2 (yes, TWO), and I can't get around it. I'm now in the market for a high quality CRT. I don't like the heat or power usage of a CRT, but with the specs of this LCD I have now being quite good, I can't see any other LCD highly surpassing this, so back to a CRT I will go unfortunately.
