Gainward GeForce4 MX 440
Gainward GeForce2 ti/450

Which card would you go with? They are both priced similarly at Newegg. I'm leaning towards the MX440 because it's a newer model and seems to do better in benchmarks. However, it has passive cooling which makes me think it may be a bit of a pooch. I'm also afraid of MX cards after my GeForce2 MX card turned out to be such a horrible gaming card.

Your thoughts?

The Geforce 4 MX 420 was about the same price as the Geforce 2 Ti450, the 440 was $13 more. I would get the Ti450, they usually overclock to about 285/500.

I would go with the Geforce 4 MX 440. It will give you better tv out, DVD performance and better AA performance than the Geforce 2 Ti 450.

Between those two I would go with the Gainward GeForce4 MX 440 as well.

<< GeForce MX440=suck >>

wow said with real honesty lol

Having read anands review of sub $200 video cards, I personally think that the 440mx doesnt seem to be performing that badly.

You get what you pay for, no frill's, it'll get the job done for current games. I wouldn't suggest getting it though, it'll be to slow to run any of the newer games comoing up. I doubt it would even run MOHAA very well.

christ, another one blinded by hype. erm, that GF'4' is just the GF2Ti on steriods. get a GF3 (any will do) or be forced to buy NV30 the minute its out. Period. simple fact is any GF4MX will last just several months with new games due to NO nFiniteFX engine i.e. crap.

Why don't you go with an ABIT or Leadtek Geforce 4 MX 440. Both overclock extremely high, (Core above 300MHz, Memory above 500MHz.)

However, the MX 440 will run today's game extremely well due to its modifed Geforce 2 Core and a borrowed "Light Speed Memory Architecture 2" from the Geforce 4 TI.

Actually, I've seen MX440 run Medal of Honor above 100FPS on 1024x768 32bit High Quality.

Both will perform satisfactorily for current games.
The GF2 Ti/450 is strongly likely to overclock to well above GF2 Ultra specs so it can compete well against the MX440.
If you like watching DVD's then it'll certainly handle DVD playback better then the GF2.

If you intend to keep it for a year or longer I'd choose the Ti/450 personally as I've more faith in it's longevity as it should handle increased ploygon counts and multiple texture formats better then the MX440.
If on the other hand this is more of a short term solution then I'd probably go with the MX440.

What kind of system was it running on?

An extra 20-30 bucks for a GeForce3 Ti200 would be a MUCH better investment.

I think Nvidia's MX card line is a waste of hard earned money! That said the GF4MX440 WILL give very good framerates on TODAYS games. Do not get a MX if you plan to play UT2k3.
