I read paradise lost and the divine comedy( in italian...so proud of me) I personally liked paradise lost a tad better but it was a bit headachy and long winded in comparison. Machiavelli wrote the Prince. I highly recommend that book, if for no other reason than to get a better perspective of the era. I also recommend Sun-Tzu Art of War since the two works seem to have become synonymous with each other.
