Is it just me who does this, or do other people skip straight past the synthetic benchmarks?

For the end user, yes, it isn't worth the time. But Developers don't skip them. Synthetics benchmarks tend to magnify the merits and flaws of the tested hardware, which tells them which route to take when coding.
