I heard about this over and over about how you shouldn't read in the dark, can anyone confirm this? Can't find it on snopes..

I do not know about reading in the dark making you blind... but I do know that reading too much during the formative years can have an affect on eyesight.

For example...

VeggieFrog started reading at 4years old. She read ALL the time. It was hard to get a book out of her hands. She read while she ate, while she soaked in the bath, and fell asleep reading. As soon as she woke up, she picked up a book, dressed, ate breakfast and walked to school reading. She read in the car, she read at the table, she read in front of the television, instead of watching it. She did this for years... she had to get glasses and the doc told her that the eyes were meant to see close up, far away and everything in between... and that her reading, non stop kept her eyes at a focus that affected her seeing far away and in between.

I've asked an optometrist about this. It's a myth, though you can cause discomfort. That probably accounts for people claiming that it will harm your eyes. Not the same thing.

Another one for the list of things I like to do that won't make me go blind.

What difference would the light source make? Wouldn't everyone in pre-electricity times have gone blind?

Is there something to this, or is it just anecdotal?

At any rate, no, it can't hurt you. It's just an old wives tale that probably has its roots in having some axe to grind, like the old "don't swim for 1/2 hour after you eat."

However, a ****** TV can make you *think* you're going blind. I thought I was going blind because I could no longer read the scroll on CNN or video game instructions. As it turns out, my TV just got blurry after 15 years.
