Reading an iMovie DVD in Windows or in VMWare OS X?

We recently had to make a video project for a class, and one of the people in the group burned the DVD (edited in iMovie) in iDVD on his iMac. He gave it to me so I could make a copy, but my Windows XP won't detect it at all. I tried using my OS X Tiger installation in VMWare, but it said "disc you inserted is unreadable." Can anyone help with this? I'd really like to get this video on my hard drive and convert it to avi so I can save it along with the rest of my school files.
