After reading this review about the case, I didn't realize that a 120mm fan makes that much of a difference in front (air flow i guess, duh).
Why would Antec only put 80mm in the front and 120mm in the back?

If I dont plan to overclock (Athlon X2 3800), do i need 2 fans running? or is the back one fine on its own?
 
You should have 2 fans running so that your getting good temps. If your worried about noise, buy Nexus fans.
 
1) What an utterly crap review that was.

2) What the hell are you on about? I don't see any references to removing the front fan and testing it.

3) I would not appreciate the SP2 PSU, i would rather buy a case without it thank you very much.

2 fans? Push/pull fan configurations generally don't help that much, it depends on the case layout and the fans in question.
 
Antec has made some very decent, solid cases, and this seems to be one of them. I think that the 80mm fans indicate an older design however, most newer designs are gravitating towards larger fans, typically 120mm, although some newer Antec designs still put 92's in the front.

IMO, an important facet of case design is drive cooling, and although you can get some, with care, indirectly by sucking in air over the drives using a rear fan, I think front fans do this job more reliably. The 1050B supports 2 80mm's in front; one in a drive cage and one separately. This is fine IMO, but 80's tend to be noisy for the airflow, so I'd prefer a single 120 or dual 92's.

That said, for drive cooling you don't have to have a great deal of airflow; one option would be to run a downvolted or quiet 80mm for drive cooling, and leave the other slot open for the exhaust fan to suck air through. I tend to believe that dual fan configurations can give more effective airflow for noise (both fans running quieter, not fans adding airflow linearly), but don't have any hard data to back this up on hand.
 
k so basically, it's a good case to get and unless im not overclocking i really shouldn't have to worry about the size of the fan at the front, correct?

It seems to have mounting for it, so put a fan there. Important for cooling hard drives if nothing else and overclocking doesn't apply to them.
 
I'm sure it's a good solid case with a decent PSU which can also handle overclocking. As to whether or not you need such a case and what values you place on features for price... I'll leave that up to you.

The only objection I have to this case is that it's marketed as a file server case. I only see cooling for 3 drives built-in, so I'd personally pick something else for this role, or at least add something like a Thermaltake iCage to cool an additional 3 drives. BTW, that's another option to intake fans -- if you're really really worried about not having a 120mm intake, you could add such a device.

That is designated a "server" case which means: noise is not that important of a design consideration. If you want low noise Antec, you get a Sonata, a 3000-B or one of the -BQE models. Noise freakazoids might want the 180 or 150.

The reviewed case is much the same as the 1000 series has always been just with a 120 in the back (always was dual 80s there in the past) and some appearance changes - no big woop. If you want it without the PSU, get the Chenming or Chieftec version.

That's the same case as in the review. What more needs be said? It's a good case basically the same as the original Antec 1000 series performance cases with a few minor updates. Plus you're stuck with the PSU they provide unless you want to sell it on eBay or such.

As I said, get the chenming or chieftec version (all basically the same case) - save yourself a bit of money and you get to choose your own PSU. You can even get it made of aluminum if you want. Here it is: Linkage

well nobody in my area sellsl chenming or chieftec, so im somewhat limited.

being "stuck" with that psu, i dont think is really that bad...i'm not an overclocker, nor plan to be.
 
kuba, was there a particular reason for you to choose that case beyond it being a brand that you can buy locally? If you can get other Antec cases, why not choose a more "modern" design such as the SLK3000B (w/o PSU) or Sonata (w/450W SP2)?
 
I think the PSU's probably just fine, and better than average. I have the same one if not a very similar one, and it's probably powering my overclocked 3800+ at this time (I have a little difficulty keeping track of which part is in which case, esp. PSU's.)
 
Well, what is your area? Sometimes these brands are sold under different names. Uneec is another of their aliases (the model no. might tip it off - ATX-601AE or 601AEB). The Kingwin 523 is another option as is some of the Coolermaster Centurion cases (some of them are much like the Kingwin inside).

Antec PSUs should not be held in as high esteem as in the past. They have put merciless price pressure on their OEM (Channel Well) and corners have been cut...
