Read only restriction on one hard drive

I am not sure this is an operating system issue as it happened with vista and now with win 7.

I have a two hard drives in a mirror array using the motherboards raid. I have 2 data partitions and 1 partition with the programs on the drives. It started out as only one of the data partitions would have read only restrictions associated with it in vista. This only would occur after a reboot. Using the diskpart utility and clearing the read only attribute works every time but it is annoying to say the least. Recently in Win 7 I am now getting two of the data volumes having read only issues, and it occurs when I put the computer to sleep at night as well as reboots.

Is this a Bios issue, or something else; imminent hardware failure? I can't believe that this is a operating system issue this odd with two separate OS's.

Appreciate any ideas you might have.

DOS file attributes (read-only, hidden, etc) and NTFS ACLs are all stored on the filesystem. The BIOS, hard disk, etc have nothing to do with it.

If you're dual-booting the SIDs for your usernames in each OS don't match so when you fix one you break the other.

I am not dual booting, I upgraded the vista to win 7. The usernames are the same and have not changed since I created them when I built the computer and installed vista on it a few years ago and the problem is a recent one.

Have you tried going non-raid and seeing if your problems go away?

No I have not, that is a good point. Though the two data partitions are having the read only applied to them but the program partition is not.

I really need the redundancy as my wife is a photographer and I do not want to lose a brides wedding photos to a drive failure. I have backup procedures in place in addition to the mirror raid but I like uptime as much as possible.

instead of raid....you might want to look at using software like Beyond Compare that will take a directory or drive sync it with another. Its not as hands off as raid, but since both drives are normal ntfs partitions it is easily recoverable by any system that you can connect the drive to. Works very well for me.

I have never heard of this, will have to look into it. If it does not go away soon I will be taking the raid off as it is annoying the everliving ... out of me. I have windows home server doing daily backups so I am fine for data integrity in case a drive fails.
