RE4 - Worth the effort?

I finally hooked my PS2 back after playing PC games for a year. So I bought RE4 since it was the highest rated new game and I've never played a RE game.

Here is my problem(s):

A. I can't aim with my thumbs! I guess I will get used to it again, I miss my mouse.
B. I can't save often enough, I hate replaying the same part over and over.

So, am I doomed to frustration, or will the game be fun and not just overly challenging? I got my a$$ handed to me a few times on the first village, they just kept coming and I was always low on ammo. I find it hard to time knife attacks and kicks. I seem to move in to kick and them get picked up and eaten.

I kinda had the same issues with the game, but if you press on -I promise you will not be disappointed. The game is a ton of fun! Wait till you fight the bosses, they're made fun again.

One thing that really bothered me on top of what you mentioned, is the lack of strafing. :( Still worth the play though...

I started playing RE4 this weekend. The worst thing about it is the control and the camera angles. The character needs to be able to move more quickly. The camera makes it really hard to see your surrounding quickly.

Aiming does take some getting used to but it's not that bad. If it were on the PC it would just be too easy with mouse aiming and the keyboard.

The first village you get to should give you enough practice to get down every part of the controls. Just keep replaying that village as many times as you need until you've got them down.

The game deffinitely ranks very, very high out of my list of games played in the past few years.

I got past the village last night after a few attempts. I basically just kept slamming buttons and then made it out with no ammo and a sliver of health. Now I'm at the farm trying to avoid contact until I find more ammo. At least let me pick up a bat or damn pitchfork, a knife is to short range and I always get attacked when I get in close.

I'm wondering what kind of pistol I have, four shots to the chest and they keep walking. Is it a BB gun?

One thing that really pissed me off was the boulder "event" towards the beginning of the game. Not only do you have to press "X" as fast as possible, they toss a symbol up on the screen that you have 1 second to press. The first two times I did it I was like WTF?!?

Go back and play the village until you can beat it without losing much health or ammo. Trust me, that practice will benefit you throughout the game. Otherwise you will constantly be playing catchup the entire game and it may very well cause you to give up on the game. Learning the basics in the village allows you to learn more advanced tactics as the game progresses forward.

Edit: Pistol to the chest is a waste of time, aim for the head or legs if you need to buy time. If you hit them in the legs they fall to the ground and you can do some melee range moves on their body to put them down for good (I forgot how). So a good tactic would be like: Legs, killing blow, legs, killing blow, legs, killing blow. Granted, that sounds repetitive and boring, its much more difficult in practice with a whole ton of zombies coming after you.

RE4 is fantastic!

Early on I would advice you that if you facing a large number of enemies, find a spot in the area so you can't get ambushed from many sides. Make it so that you and the enmey only have one direct shot towards each other. Aim for the legs and head also any type of weapon they may carry...

I don't see how aiming is bad, you have a freaking red dot...

Save points are fine (no ribbons!) Meanwhile, there are a series of checkpoints located about the world so that if you happen to die, the game will automatically start you at a nearby point, eliminating aggrivating replay-throughs.

Yep you must aim for the head as often as possible if you only have 1-2 coming at you aim for the head since you should have enough time to. Also like he said if you have only couple coming at you and are back to back or side to side, shoot one in the legs run up and hit the button it tells you to(A I think) for a kick or melee attack and you will hit both if close enough.

SPOILER?:
Wait till you get to the ones with parasites coming out of their heads once you kill them it gets harder. But by then you might have the controls down. Also if I ain't mistaken you have to hit the parasites to kill them which would be like getting a headshot.

Anyway it is by far the best RE and the only one I really enjoyed.

Well, that is when shooting them in the legs becomes more useful. Because the ground attack move will kill them without ever dealing with any additional effects caused by blowing their heads off. The leg shot manuever becomes one of the best moves in the game.

Heh.. awesome game. I remember that dumb bastage boss SALAZAR. I've never hated any boss in any other game as much as I hated that damn midget...

RE4 is one of the best games ever made IMO.. ranks right up there with Zelda in my book.

Yes the pistol is weak, but you will be able to upgrade it and buy new weapons later. You need to conserve ammo, so like others have said, shooting them in the legs so they take a knee then run up quick and kick them, the kick will knock back other enemies around the guy that's down. If it's one guy, get them to fall on the ground then run up and knife away, if they start getting up shoot them in the leg again... this type of stuff will become 2nd nature before long. Use knife of course to break boxes.

Also, you should have found a better weapon in the first village. Feel free to pick up stuff in the houses after that first big fight you just had.

As far as your aiming trouble, have you tried inverting the y-axis? For some reason this felt more natural for me.

And yes it is certainly worth the effort, it could be the best game of the current console generation. Have fun! :D

Yeah because one shot with the rocket and that was the end of him. But he was ANNOYING and he really got on my nerves....I really wanted to kill him. You spend a significant amount of time chasing him hoping to slash the midget with your knife but then he mutates... lol.

I was so freaked and hurt from the village fight that I ran through as fast I could to the next level to save. I was worried that one more fight would mean dying. Maybe I will do the village over (#$%#$) and look through the houses.

Its been a little to easy for you using the keyboard/mouse combo. You just need some console skillz son. :)

I went back and did the village again (seventh time?). This time I ran into a house and grabbed everything. I killed on e round of villagers who came in, then ran out to the single path. I then used two grenades and a few rounds to ge the rest. Instead of ending with a sliver of health and no ammo, I ended the level with 70 rounds for the pistol, the shotgun and 16 rounds, a grenade and lots of herbs.

I remembered why I freaked out and ran to the exit the first time I beat the village. One time I ran into the village and ran around until a chainsaw guy killed me. So the next time I beat the level and didn't se the chainsaw guy, I figured he was lurking around so ran through. I guess he is just there is you try to skip the cutscene.

I just realized tonight that if you hold the "square" button, you can run. That makes it much easier to move around. Too bad they don't have "always run".

That difference in play will make a large portion of the game much more enjoyable for you :).

You know you're a PC gamer when you play RE4 and you get pissed that you can't strafe. (me)
