thats not what the fed does. the fed provides credit when credit is needed. it tries to keep the united states at full employment while balancing the need for low inflation to keep people confident that their investments will be worth something. when people don't invest, the economy will tank and then, guess what, you have lots of umemployment.

EDIT: and who is getting minimum wage in the current economy? even grocry sackers are getting $8.25 an hour!

What the Fed does is a whole other thread. It is a private bank just like Wells Fargo. The only reason it does anything is to increase cash inflow into it's coffers.

why exactly would it do that? its not a private bank like any other bank. go look up its structure and then tell me it is again. the fed is not out to make a profit. the fed is out to do exactly what i've already said. and it does a damned good job at it too. much better than any politician controlled or profit driven institution could possibly do.

Wow...
Sure am glad most of you weren't a part of the constitutional convensions.

Maetryx, I don't think your country would last 20yrs. If it didn't collapse due to external armies picking off state at a time it would fall from internal anarchy.

I would make every registered voter eligible for the presidential lottery. Draw 1000 names, these people would be sent to classes on how the government works then those who score highest on the tests would be made President, vice President, Senate and house. Keep the same term set up just fill postions as needed by lottery. The winners of course would draw the pay. This would be the end of professional politians, the plague of our country.

RossGr, I like your idea. I might just want to use the ones that score the least though. :D

Moonbeam:
Yeah, I am not really happy with the selection criteria yet, Seems that there should be some training involved, but how to pick the final winners?

I would clearly define what is meant by interstate commerce since much Federal interference in state affairs is done under the cover of this phrase. The current Supreme Court has curtailed this a tiny bit but not nearly enough. Further since no one in the 21st century uses the term "militia" the way it was used in the 18th century I would rewrite the 2nd ammendment to clearly state that the right to keep and bear arms was not granted to the people but retained by the people as a pre existing right when the Constitution was ratified. The Constitution is actually a well written document and I suspect that no matter what changes we make to the language of it eventually it would be twisted in ways we cannot conceive of by the court system. Much of what is done at the Federal level today is in direct violation of the Constitution yet we the people accept it and the courts allow it to continue.

In my world, you can say adios to welfare... if you need money, go get a goddamned job like the rest of us. I'm tired of the government giving handouts to some do-nothing, lazy, selfish, self-centered, uneducated woman with no husband, 6 kids, 1 on the way, and a "what can you do for me" attitude. OR that deadbeat guy, high school dropout, drinking all day, filthy, standing on the corner with a piece of cardboard saying "I can't work but you can still hand me $5 so I can go drink more Thunderbird tonite."

I'm just tired of people saying "what can you do for me" when they should be doing something to help everyone else... like working and not garnishing part of my wages for their welfare check.

Someone mentioned the other day that the US doesn't garnish wages... that's BS. Next time you see someone get a welfare check, you'll see your garnished wages right in front of you.

since we have some other ideas already, i'll toss mine into the ring...

i propose an Amendment which simply states that any monies spent by Congress, shall in the bill authorizing the expenditures, also cite a Constitutional basis for having the authority to spend said funds.

Needless to say, that won't be hard for the core spending bills (expenditures for defense, etc... things which are expressly listed as being the responsibility of the Federal government) and will make it very hard indeed to pass pork spending bills (such as a grant to help build the Lawrence Welk museum).

In any event, that would set down in writing a clear rationale for why Congress feels that any given expenditure is a good idea, so that the electorate can judge for themselves.

How about making English our official language? I like the diversity and such in NYC, but they need to learn some English.

Definetly, there is no reason to keep these people afloat unless they're going to put some effort in. I was watching the news a few days ago here in Minnesota, and we just finished a special session getting tax laws and budgets hammered out (narrowly averting a government shutdown! :Q) and they had these people standing outside the Governor's office complaining about a 5 year limit on Welfare. 5 Years wasn't enough!? They had their kids laying down on the floor with paper tombstones that said things like "Victim of the Welfare Limit" or "Victim of the 2001 State Legislature". Unbelievable.

WoW, where to start....?

moonbeam,
You want that 99% tax rate, your welcome to pay that starting next year. Put-up or shut-up they say! How would 99% be fair, this class envy argument gets old, flat tax can work, everyone pays EVERYONE works! You want a socialist gov't move to Canada or europe. Nobody is stopping you...

Maetryx,
Leave the House and the Senate separate, with term limits imposed, things would be MUCH nicer than it is now. Keep the military at the federal level, states would allow citizens to join serve, then return home. Matter of fact, i believe citizenship should require military service, state or federal level, but it should be mandatory-(say 2 yrs full-time, 3 yrs part-time). Not a bad start, needs a little tweaking, but i'd be proud to live there...

iamfried,
Don't take what the DOE places in those text books as FACT, they have a heavy liberal slant-(DOE is a liberal puppet). The Dept of Defense was 19% of the 2000 budget, thats not JUST the military. OMB 40% lol, i thought Clinton cut the military, so if it's 40% now it must have been 60%+ before he got in office. lol....
Federal Health care-(medicare/medicaid) in 2000 was 23% Hmmmm, just imagine what "Hilary care" is going to cost. Let's see national funded health care for the entire US.... Can you say, revolt!

Alot of excellent ideas here, keep the brain cells working. If we don't fix this during our generation, then our children will be stuck with this mess.

Good Luck...

Freedom OF religion. specifially state that the governemtn CAN NOT deal with anything religous or enforce religion on the people.

Also, get rid of the DEA and IRS - unreasonable search and seizures.
