Re-wrapping a leather steering wheel

Hopefully there will be a few Toyota or Ford owners who will empathize.

The steering wheel on my aging (but paid for!) Toyota is wearing badly. Apparently, it is a known issue with late model Fords and Toyotas as they use similar leather/dyes on their steering wheels. They flake/rub off, leaving a dirty, uneven gray/brown surface that feels awkward and looks terrible. It really stands out as the rest of my interior is in VG or better shape (some creases in the leather seats is the only noticeable wear).

Got quoted $600 for a new steering wheel (airbag) and detail shops wont touch it for fear of making it worse. Tried some wheel covers and they're just awful. Bad grip/tacky looking/dont match or cover, etc.

But I have no idea where to start re: finding someone to re-wrap the wheel. Does anyone still bother in today's disposable society? My car has around 100k of very servicable performance on it before it should begin to deteriorate. I'd rather drop some money on this fix than buy a new car cause I cant stand the look and feel of the steering wheel.

Gracias.

So do you cut the old one off (shudder), or is it an overlay?

Bitch to stitch?

I like that perforated Euro one from Wheelskins. That looks fairly OEM.

1. To the best of my knowledge, overlay

2. Yeah, but its pre-perforated,just that with all handiwork, its going to be a bitch no matter what.

3. Theres 1 more place that I've unfortunately forgotten that will do it for you but you have to take off your steering wheel and send it in for them to stitch, they do good work but you wont have a steering wheel for a week or two.

Not to burst your bubble but have you tried the local junkyard. I don't know what year toyota you have or if it has airbag or not. But you can probably pick up a steering wheel for your car for like 20 bucks.

If it has an airbag you have to go through the process of deativating the airbag computer and removing the airbag itself from the steering wheel. I believe this process is outlined in most Haynes manuals as well as chilton manuals.
