I know the GOP = the Republican Party - but does it really stand for grand old party? Or, are you pulling my leg??? ;):)

It was grand 200 years ago when it still had libertarian roots ;)

The Republican party was started a little over 130 years ago. Originally they wanted a large centralized federal government. The Democrats, however, wanted states to have the most rights.

Really, I thought it was God Offal Party, or Grey Old Phreaks, but some old guy told me it really is the Grand Old Party. Oh well.

there may be some confusion because there was a party called the Demicratic-Republicans or something, which is also often call the Democrat party. But I believe that the Democrats were actually founded by supporters of Andrew Jackson.On the other hand its been a couple years since ive taken US history so maybe im making this up
