Would it be possible to see if a thread has been locked, once you are inside the thread? Either some kind of written flag, or perhaps if you try to "reply" it won't even give you the reply screen?

What has happened to me many times is I click on a link to a thread, which is locked but I don't realize it, then I type out my reply and only find out when I go to submit it that it is not possible. Thanks!
 
well, if you are reading the thread and it gets locked before you finish replying, that would be tricky 😛... it's happened to me a few times.

do we get emails saying a thread we are subscribed to has been locked?
