Re-installing Windows

I have a friend that needs to reinstall windows and wants me to do it. They have their origional disc for windows 2k, but have office XP. No worries, they are the origional discs. But here is the problem, where do i find their activation codes... I would rather just go in and do the installs and not have to call microsoft... Thanks

If these are the original disks, shouldn't the 'owner' of the disks have the activation codes?

Are you installing over the existing OS & OfficeXP? If he's having problems, I would recommend formatting & doing a clean install of both, rather than putting a 'bandaid' on it...... -kd5-

Yes, the first code for office XP is onthe cd. but I am talking about the activation code thingy... They just bought a cd for xp home and would like to do a clean install, (no the cd is not the upgrade but full version). Anyhow, I myself have office 2k and just use the key on the back, so I don't have any experience with the Activation codes for Office. Should I just install windows XP as an upgrade instead?

The activation codes aren't somthing you type in, usualy. Just do the reinstall and follow the activation wizards instructions.

I'm sure the activation codes they have are currently residing in the windows registry somewhere. Probably in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion or some derivative of it.

If they've got the disks, they'll have the installation codes on the CD cases/sleeves if not the actual CD. If they threw them away, make them call ahead of time and get the codes or something. It's their mistake, you shouldn't have to worry about it. Well, if you wanna be a nice guy, you can do it, but just don't sweat it.

if you actually have the cd i see no moral reason not to use some warez to get a key

Get this...I installed Access XP on my computer the other day, and I had to call M$ again. My activation code didn't work.

I was so peeved because they pestered me about how I have "positively" installed this on more than 1 computer. I might as well just download the $hit and use that if I'm going to be pestered with a LEGAL version. They are just jerks. I hope M$ burns for this!

I'm going to convert to Linux in 2 years from now, I'm so mad!
