re-finishing gibson les paul guitar

My friend is gonna give me his les paul studio guitar, but the original paint job is really banged up, and needs to be re done. (yea yea, it plays fine but it looks like crap 🙂) Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of paint to use on it when refinishing it? It needs to be durable, i was thinking that epoxy appliance paint? I dont know how that would look, though.I want to do it right the first time. Want to try to match it as much as possible to the original color, and shine...like this... Thanks!

How do you suggest I get it refinished? Is there anywhere that will do it?

take it to the local music shop and let them handle it.

I'll have to go back to guitar center this week and see if they can do it/suggest a place to do it, was there today with the friend checking out fender's cyber twin amp...that thing is sweet! Les paul thing didnt come up till later in the night...

What kind of a friend gives you his Les Paul though? One hell of a friend 🙂 What was so special about the cyber twin? (I'm out of the loop regarding guitar amps)

OMFG BEAT THE GUY WHO PUT STICKERS ON IT UNTIL HIS NOSE IS FLAT

put stickers on a squier if you want but you just don't do that to a gibson.

I think the cyber twin allows you to emulate like 60 different guitar amps...they're really nice.

Ahh, nice. Wait you mean effects built in? Damn I feel so inadequate with my 25w Fender 🙁

IIRC its got a little knob you can go thru the different kinds of amps, I don't really know the specifics though.

I remember wanting one for a long time but decided to settle for a Marshall VS100 100watt head and a Marshall VS style 4x12" cabinet instead 🙂

The studios aren't actually that expensive. They're still good guitars of course.

Definitely get it professionaly re-finished. See if they can take all the paint right off and get down to the wood. Hopefully it'll have a nice maple top and you can get a sweet sunburst finish on it. Heritage Cherry sunburst is a nice classic finish, but I think the Vintage sunburst or Tobacco burst finishes are where it's at.

<---- Heritage Cherry Epi Les Paul with Gibson hardware

Vintage Sunburst finish of a model I did up in 3dmax

its about time I see a pic of your guitar 🙂 Studios are great for the price(around $1200 new IIRC). However I chose to go used, I bought a 1988 Fender American HM Strat for $550. The guy told me he bought one back when the first came out for $1000 or so, but they were discontinued in 1992 because Fender came into the metal scene a little late (HM = heavy metal btw 🙂). I'm sure in a few years a used LP Studio can be had for around $750 for so in decent shape.

I just realized this has nothing to do with the topic 😱 Oh well, very nice guitar you have silverpig 😀

That's a pretty sweet deal you got there. You can get LP Studios for $1200 cdn new here I'm pretty sure. Occasionally they'll have a sale and you can find them cheaper. Not bad considering the LP Standards usually go for about $3000.

Thanks. "She my pride and joy" 🙂

I guess he just doesnt like the les paul as much as either of his strats(hasnt played it in years), he has a stevie ray vaugh and an american strat w/ a birdseye maple neck on it now.

I get a marshall amp that doesnt get used any more(super lead 900 sl-x or something) and some chintzy no-name cabinet to get me started 🙂

I guess hes not really 'giving' them to me, gonna pay off in computer hardware, food, work and other stuff over the next few yrs 😛

wow, did you say to get you started?? I wish I had that kinda stuff when I started, I had to play a $35 guitar and a $20 amp for my first 1.5 years of playing 😛 Good luck to you and realize what you have is EXTREMELY nice and many very good guitar players who have been playing a long time don't have that kinda stuff 🙂 good luck man 🙂

Not all Les Pauls are expensive, especially if you can find a beat up stage guitar (bar bands are hard on their instruments) that still plays well....acoustics are harder to find in this regard.

Being you have a solid color and also a solid body it shouldn't be hard to refinish....I am not sure if appliance paint is the proper finish though, a call to the local guitar shop will get you the answers you need.
