RDRAM upgrade question for Gateway 700x (Lexington)

I figured this would be an easy thing to do. I bought a Gateway 700x in March 2002, with a P4-2 GHZ Northwood CPU. I have 2 128MB rdrams in it (Samsung) and thought I would upgrade. The NewsGroups tell me no problem. PC800 is all the same...as long as you install the same size in each bank, and non-ecc.

So, off to look at 2 256MB pc800 RDRAM sticks. Kingston has some ValueRam KVR800X16/256 for $86 each. HOWEVER, the Kingston site says the "certified" RDRAM for the Gateway 700X is KGW800A/512...a 512MB KIT for about $350!!!!

So, I now have no idea what that means...Kingston just says that the KVR series is generic...why should this matter? I believe the Gateway Lexington is just an Intel D850MV MoBo...and the KVR is listed for that board.

TIA

Hey Dave, not sure why it says that about the RAM for your comp and I'd get a couple more opinions before i purchased based on my knowledge about it. But I can tell you from first hand experience that the system Im running right now has 2 128 sticks of mushkin non-ecc ram that I installed initially. Then 6 months later I added 2 128 sticks of the Kingston non-ecc Rambus and I have had no problems whatsoever. I think you are correct, and based on my system, it does not matter what brand of RDRAM you put in and \or mix with another as long as it is PC800 non-ecc RAMBUS. (or PC800 ecc...depending which the system had to begin w\) I think you would be fine going w\ the Kingston. I'd wait for 1 or 2 more post though just to make sure we're correct.

p.s. Here's a place that has some Samsung RAMBUS for $82.48 each (shipped), if you wanted to go w\ more Samsung sticks.

Great...will look for more replys. I would like to get it via Gateway. They do have the generic valueram for $93. I am sure I can get it price matched to Computer Giants for $86 each. HOWEVER, I have between $75 and $125 in Reward $$$ so I may get away paying $47 for BOTH. For that amount I would not like to go with Samsung unless the Kingston will just not work at all!
