RDRAM Memory with ECC and Non-ECC.. Does it really matter which one you get?

Hello Folks ...i'm setting up my brand new box with atleast 512MB of RDRAM memory on an Asus P4T-E Motherboard and had few questions

a) i kinnda have a basic understanding of ECC/Non-ECC Types of memory but besides the price difference between the two, is it something that i should really consider when purchasing the memory? I'm mainly going to be using my box for gaming and multimedia.

b)Would i see a major increase in performance if i have more than 512MB of RDRAM?

c)Does brand name really matter , if so which ones would u recommend?

e) Any sites with good prices for RDRAM ? i hear prices are going up fpr memory

🙁

a. From what I understand, ECC RAM has a built in error checking mechanism and is mostly for servers. I personally wouldn't spend the extra money for it (it might actually cause a slight slow down in performance)
b. As of right now, I don't think you would see an increase in performance with over 512MB RAM, unless you do alot of photo or video editing in win2k or XP (I don't think win9x can even utuilize over 512MB)
c. On average, the difference in price betweein generic and name brand memory is pretty small, so I recomend going with a recognized name, like Crucial or Mushkin (look around the forums- there's lots of threads on what people think is the best one). I think its worth it, especially since most of these places have lifetime warranties and are usual just better.
d. don't know where RDRAM deals are

a) If your only going to be gaming get Non-ECC memory. You only need ECC memory if you building a server
b) No, unless you routinely have 5 or more apps running at the same time or you do 3D modeling or CAD work.
c) Honestly there aren't that many brands of RDRAM to chose from. Corsair, Mushkin and Kingston are the only ones that came to mine. Corsair and Mushkin both use Samsung chips and Kingston uses NEC chips. If your planning on overclocking your new rig get Corsair or Mushkin memory because Samsung's chips are known to clock higher then NEC's, I have 4 sticks of Corsair RDRAM running 127mhz.
d) RDRAM has actually gone down in price, its DDR and SDRAM that's gone up. NewEgg has some of the best prices on RDRAM, that where I got mine. You can also find sites on Pricewatch selling generic Samsung sticks for a little less then Corsair's, Mushkin and Kingston's RIMM's.

Get the sticks with Samsung modules.......they O/C excellent. Also something to consider, you may want to hold off "filling up" with PC800 RD as PC 1066 is suppose to arrive shortly..........😉
