RDP Performance on Virtual Machine vs Physical Hardware

I noticed that the GUI performance over RDP is better with physical machine compared to headless Virtual Machine. Why is that discrepancy? Will there be a difference between Windows vs Linux hosts as far as GUI performance over RDP is concerned?

How are the VMs configured - if your host is in NAT mode, that'll add a hop and some lag.

Could also be related to GPU acceleration on the UI.

My current setup includes Multiple instances of physical Win7 pro instances\Fedora 20\Ubuntu14
Windows boxes run VMware player VMs of various Win7\Vista\Server 2003\Server 2008\Server 2012\Fedora 21\Ubuntu 14\Centos 6.
All bridged.
I haven't noticed any real differences between remoting into VM's or physical boxes.
This over both gb and wireless. At the very least, I don't recall there being any significant issues.
