My 6 year old RCA TV is, approximately after an hour of watching, making a rather loud pop or snapping sound and shutting down. It'll turn on again just fine immediately after, but it goes to the setup screen as if it were new.

Anyone know what could be happening? And is there any way to attempt to find the problem? I understand TV repair is potentially dangerous...

Sounds broken to me.

Edit: yes, don't darwin yourself, there are capacitors in there that would love to make your heart stop.

CRT repair is not for the faint of heart and unless your picture is fvcked up, there's nothing you can do in a modern set. Get a new one.

Yeah. e-tape wrapped screwdriver shaft with huge linesman's gloves (jacked off an electric company truck) just BARELY make me feel safe inside a CRT.

It doesn't sound like it's a CRT problem though. Probably just the receiver/tuner card. My family is on their 3rd (counting the original) receiver/tuner card in the Sony Trinitron we have in the family room. IIRC it's about a $100 fix. The TV is over 8 years old and still has a great picture. The only reason we've had to replace those other two receiver/tuner cards is because of lightning strikes (no cable, just a giant outdoor arial antenna).

IIRC it's a known problem with RCA TVs. I have no idea what the source or solution to the problem is, but I have read several places that RCA sets either pop like that or suddenly stop working.

Protip: Don't buy RCA. Nice picture, terrible build quality.

My initial thoughts are that there's an issue with the tube or you have static buildup that's discharging and shorting out the TV. For starters I suggest that you take an air duster and clear the thing out.

Maybe you wouldn't have those problems if you used an antenna with a different font. ;)

But the Times Roman antennae just don't get the same reception. ;)

If I recall correctly, about the time you must have bought the set a TV repairman told me not to buy RCA because the soldering around some major part of the board was defective and would probably fail, since most did. It would pop, etc as it did, or so he said. good luck.
