Avoid RCA imho. RCA was the biggest waste of money I ever spent on a TV, talk about a piece of junk.

Hey, 99 bucks for a piece of junk is a pretty hot deal, imho. Initially, i was thinking RCA, "Bleh." But now, wow. Jump on this one people. You will be hard pressed to find a better deal on a piece of junk. This is from a guy with years of dumpster diving under his belt.

Yeah, RCA TV's are no Sony but I figure this TV's worth the shot. I've bought TV's from Buy.com Clearance before and it's been hit-and-miss. Fortunately if it's defective within 14 days you can print out a prepaid shipping label and send it back for a refund. Plus there's a 1-year warranty from Thomson Electronics.

I also found the RCA 2" LCD TFT TV at Overstock for $69.99. Use the $20/50 to get it for $50 shipped. I've seen the 2.5" version and the picture is surprisingly sharp and bright, you can see a lot more detail than you would think from such a small screen. 13 left.

Sorry, but this is NO deal.

You WILL, I repeat WILL, need to have an upgrade done to this set.
95% failure rate. Of course the 5% that don't fail within the first
year will be posting how great the set is for them. Cost of upgrade
$65 to $100 depending on shop. No matter what other posts say, the
RCA's/GE/Proscan's are a known dud in the electronics service business.
Why on earth would they give you a 1 year warranty when there new retail
units only give you 90 days? Also, the company is sooo bad, that I
have told many customers with TV's that failed after 4 months to call
or write to Thomson. The companies written response was "Sorry, the
warranty was for 90 days only, and the customer must pay for any repairs
after 90 days.

You can buy this 19" set on sale at Target, Walmart, and most other
stores for around $135.00. But, they too WILL need the upgrade!!!!

These are great sets for me.
I fix probably 15 to 20 of them a week, and they supply me with 60%
of my weekly income. Allows me to buy all the deals posted here.

EDIT: Ok, not 95% within 1 year. Try 94.999% within 3 years.
It is not a matter of "IF" it will, but "WHEN" it will fail.
This is a guaranteed failure rate, because of a design flaw.
To put it in simple terms, they did away with a normal, stand alone
tuner in these RCA/GE's, and instead did a poor job of placing the
tuning components on the chassis. Solder used was defective and WILL
break, causing all kinds of problems well beyond tuning.

95%?

I doubt it. There may be truth to what you say. But 95% is absurd.

If you're going to make up statistics, at least make it semi-plausible.

I have experience with 2 RCA televisions. 1, a 20" console unit that my parents bought in the early 70s lasted for about 20 years. The second, a 27" console that several of us bought in 1997 for my grandfather died about a year after purchase and cost around $175 to fix. It has some other nice features like turning on in the middle of the night and random static. I was about to buy this 19" until I remembered my experiences with the last RCA.

Speaking of GE, yeah I know this is getting off topic...but GE appliances suck. I have a 5 year old house with all GE appliances and the washer, dryer, microwave, dishwasher, stove and refrigerator had to be repaired or replaced in the past 2 years. :|....oh btw GE stock is way overpriced too, short it! :p

yes GE is the bane of electronics. check consumer reporting agencies and GE has the highest failure rates on everything, tv's, dvd players, you name it. stay away from them. i wouldnt even purchase an svideo cable made by GE the other day.

Damn. Ordered this yesterday--it was delivered about an hour ago.

(All you RCA haters, I'm replacing an RCA 19" TV that lasted about 3 yrs. If this one lasts that long (for $100) I'll be extremely happy.)

I bought a 19 inch RCA stereo TV back in '93 when I had my first apartment.

I still use it today for my daughter

It has moved around at least 15 times (new apartments/house - rearranging furniture)

Works great

It depends on who actually made your RCA/GE/Proscan TV, if it's made by Thomson Electronics (look at the bottom of the TV), it's definitely crap. They always fail right after the warranty has expired.

Hmmm. Plugged it in, perfect picture and good sound. Then it started making some weird screeching noise. Turned it off and back on--stopped. I'm definitely keeping an eye on it. If it goes bad, I'll be giving Thomson some good old fashioned hey-ll.

Ahh, the sound of money to me.
RCA's music to my ears.
Cha-Ching.

BTW, Thomson Consumer Electronics, or TCE, has been making these P.O.S.'s
for more than 10 years, so they all will say TCE on them!

Cha-Ching, I smell more money for more deals!
Make sure you tell all your ex-friends to buy this deal too!

RobsTV, do you work on Toshiba Televisions too? I got a 27" Toshiba that is about 12 years old. It has been flawless until recently, the picture is now streching vertically. Someone told me it just needs a couple of cheap resitors replaced, did you ever hear of this problem?...Thanks :D

Sorry this is off topic.
I will try answer TV related questions via email.
Robstv@bigfoot.com

As to the Toshiba, yes that is very common, but it is not resistors.
There are 2 small capacitors, (reddish in color), that fail.
1 or 2.2 microfarad, depending on the chassis.

Sorry, Rob, no soup for you.

Buy.com is picking this one up and sending me a different one.

I'm confused as to why people would repair a $200 television anyway. TV's these days are NOT durable goods, just like everything else. Cheaper to replace than to repair, esp. in the long run.
