FYI RC72 Pre-Release Beta. Gawd help you all.

BTW I just found the hidden key in RC72 it's "all your distributing computing belong to us" :)

Don't think I want to start on something so long-term that really accomplishes nothing except proving that something can be done. Oh well, good luck to the people who do attempt this, and I hope for your sakes that processor power increases quite exponentially in a short time so you won't be stuck on this for 10 years or so. :Q ;)

Once it comes out of beta, I'll probably throw it on remote machines since the DNet client is so nice about hiding away and connecting whenever the computer goes on-line. My normal fleet will probably be on SETI for quite a while now.

>stuck on this for 10 years or so

that's putting it lightly.... it took like what 4 years and massive power todo 64 when there were hardly any other distributing computing projects. Now with project like UD, Gnome and Folding already on there way with massive followings which have more of a 'moral' accomplishment I just don't see the masses moving out of those projects and into another useless distributing computing project. I really don't think you will see the same mass following with RC72 that you saw with RC64, my take is 15 years minimum maybe even 20.

Well, when RC5-64 started, the then current processor speeds put the 100% mark at (I believe) around 10-15 years. As processors got faster and faster, that improved to the 4 years it actually took us.

And who knows, maybe RC5-72 will be solved in the first 15% instead of the last 15%, so it could be over in a few months! :)

Note: Since each number passed 64 doubles the amount of keys, it isn't just 8 times harder... It is 2^8 times harder, or 256 times harder. That means using the same processing power we used for RC5-64 with no upgrades or new users... It would take us 1024 years to finish 100% of the keyspace (give or take a decade!)

Now, how's THAT for daunting!

15-20 years? That's a heck of a long time!

Although i'm thinking most of the RC5-64 people will go back to it.. so it won't be completely neglected. It maybe need to rethink some recruiting ideas! ;)

I would consider throwing in a snide remark about this new RC72 project, except that S@H(my main project) could very well be in the same boat as far as time taken to analyze signals for ET intelligence.
