I keep seeing threads pop up about RC5, one guy even saying he was being prosecuted by the state of Georgia or something because of it. Seems that many members here are pretty vocal about it, but I have no clue what it is. :eek:Can someone please explain to me, in plain english, what RC5 is and how/why it's causing so much trouble? Thanks.

It is a contest to crack the 64 bit encryption code, and is being sponsored by the company that developed the code. Many thousands of participants, and thousands of teams. Team AnandTech is currently ranked 2nd in the world.

Basically, it is to demonstrate the power of "Distributed Computing", or putting many individual systems together to attack a problem.

There are quite a few projects to choose from, not just RC5 - although that's the one in which I'm involved.
