RC5 : What exactly is it, and how can I help?

I've heard a little here and there, but RC5 hasn't been fully explained to me. I'd appreciate answers to any or all of the below questions.

1. What is the RC5 project?
2. What's the web address?
3. How do I start?
4. Doesn't Anadtech have a team (going for 1st place, or something)? If so, how do I help out by joining the team?

Thanks peepoe! 🙂

I can't believe the zealots have left your post alone for a whole 11 minutes!
Links can be found in the discussion a couple of days ago here. I did look it up but it seemed longwinded and supremely pointless to me. But I'm a schizoid, I never was part of a team or fu***d cheerleaders.......

1) it's to prove that 64bit encryption isn't strong enough by brute force tactics..(apperntly it's taking ALL of us this damn long to crack it...i'm pretty statisfied that it's strong enough...and yet like the drone I am I still crack), all the computers that participate try and crack together in a distributed computing fashion to become far more powerful than any measly supercomputer yay! *cheers* bleh..I actually think it's pretty pointless but it's a fun competition to try and get AT to #1.

2) I dunno...

3) private message dennilfloss 😛 <ed>In fairness this was a cheap recruiting trick, I'm on the TA-Cube borg mini-team, and Dennil will hook you into the Cube 🙂 you get to be on a damn cool mini-team and it's alot easier than setting up your own account
TA Cube home there is a link to the later-mentioned paulson tutorial, and there are links to get you started. Be assimilated. If you are message Dennil and tell him your CPU so he can add it to our horde 🙂 We rock.
</ed>

4) Yes AT has a team and many mini-teams. Paulson is the #1 RC5 cheerleader I think...PM him maybe...

If you want more answers go to the Distributed Computing forums, or look at the link in Paulson's sig...(yes he's a super Rc5 cheerleader)

the DC forum would be the best place for answers though.

Well, you could win $1000 (I think that's right anyway) if you are the one who finds the key. Admittedly, that this is not the reason that anyone I've met does it, but it's worth mentioning.

Ohhh, I could build a fairly nice gaming rig for that. 😀 Too bad the chances of me winning are around one in one billion to the tenth power. 😕

HappyFace, is not about winning the $1000.

As Russ said it once, it's about kicking the other team's butt! To show who has the most computing power! 😉

It is a distributed computing program, similar to SETI@Home. RC5 is a 64-bit encryption that we are trying to break using brute force methods. We are trying to prove that it is weak. There are thousands of trillions of possible keys. And so far about 34% of them have been tested.

The web address for RC5 is: RC5-64

Current RC5 stats: RC5 stats

To join the RC5 project simply download the client and install it. For more info click on this link: AnandTech RC5. It has instructions on how to install the client and how to join Team AnandTech.

Team AnandTech recently became the number one team in the world. But there are other teams gaining on us very quickly. We need all the help we can get. Any computers that you could contribute would be greatly appreciated, regardless of clockspeed or type. Every CPU cylce counts.

The client program will not slow down your computer in anyway. It only uses "spare" CPU cycles that aren't being used by anything else. If you are running a program that requires 100% of your CPU's power the client will get out of the way and wait until there are cycles to spare again.

I hope this answers your questions. If you have any more questions email or PM me. Or go to the distributed computing forum, all your questions can be answered there. I hope that you decide to join us, we need every computer we can get! 🙂

Welcome to the one of the BEST Team around HappyFace. Now go and spread the words and assimilate.😛

the reason why no-one has mentioned RC5 for a while, is cause most of us rc5'ers see this part (general hardware) as being pretty much saturated.

ie, not many people who read this one will join at all, because those who DO read it, have had the chance to join so many times, but don't care (I call em party poopers) and therefor don't join.
