RC5 & SETI on the same computer, is that bad?

How much would RC5 rate suffer if you also run SETI on the same machine? I've been running RC5 for almost 2 years now and I think it's time to try SETI.

RC5 relinqueshes to Seti. Thus, seti gets nearly all the power...but, if you don't have a WU in que, it'll do RC5 automatically 🙂

RC5 will not get any resources if run at the same time a SETI. There are several people who run them simultaneously, using SETI as the screensaver and letting RC5/OGR run in the background continously.

I'm trying them out on dual cpu. One is WinNT4 & the other is Win2K. Both running as application. I noticed that in Win2K if SETI does not have the focus, the graph pause & get updated once in a while. If it has the focus, the cpu time just goes on continously.

In WinNT4, SETi contineously pump while RC5 seems to have lowered its keyrate.

How come in Win2K, if I maximize SETI then minimized, task manager will reset priority to LOW?

It seems that in Win2K, you can't maintain 50-50 between the two applications. At the same priority level, one seems to grab cpu power. If cpu power is grabbed by RC5, bumping SETI to below normal in priority level will give it 60% cpu time.

How long does it take to complete a work unit?

When exactly I can join a team? Will that be tomorrow?

you should be able to do processor assignments. set seti to run on one processor of the dual box using a command switch for the command line version of the client, then rc5 to run on the other. some other people on here with dual boxes run it that way and it works for them.

Elfenix is correct. BTW you should be able to join a team as soon as you first start crunching. All you have to do is get your password from s@h and then join the team.🙂

I joined TeamAnandTech but I haven't completed a work unit. On Win2K, if the monitor turn off after a few minutes, SETI stop processing.

Is0s - make sure your seti is set to "always processing" and also check your power management settings in Control Panel to make sure the PC doesn't go to sleep...

Yes, it's set to always run. It never goes to sleep but when Win2K turn off monitor, only RC5 continues to crack, SETI seems to fall sleep.:| I'm using version 3.03 GUI.

My WinNT4 SETI seems to process without halting. But RC5 cracking suffered big time.🙁

In Win2K Pro, SETI seems to loose cpu time when another program gets the focus. Oh well, at least RC5 gets 99% cpu time when that happens.

Make sure you set the screensaver to go to blank screen mode in less than 5 mins, or your SETI times will be really high.

You could run the SETI CLI if you want and make it only use processor #2, then processor 1 would be open for normal use, and RC5.
