Are there any appreciable differences between these OS's regarding the rc5 crunching speed? I am going to set up a few AMD K6-2 400 boxes just for rc5 (yeah, I know, they're lame at it) and wondered if any of these three OS's had a speed advantage.

I hear Linux is faster, but every time I go to set it up on something, I get a killer headache that lasts until I take a format c: tablet.

My current herd has expanded about as much as it can, although I will be adding a 566 celeron (hopefully running at 850) by the end of the weekend. I have switched over to running the pproxy (one at work, one at home), and life is good...here's the details:

9/5 machines:
3 Celeron 500's
2 PII 350's

24/7 machines:
2 PIII 800's
1 PIII 500
1 Celeron 525
1 P133
1 K63-450
1 K63-400

Nice....
NT does a pretty decent job, but Linux IS faster...
Trust me, to me Linux is like wearing pantyhose (they hate it when I say that) - it's unusual, it's different, and somehow... "icky" - but my old K6/2-300 was doing 499 KKeys/sec with the older client, 500 with the new one, and 513 with Linux and the new client.

BTW, obviously I don't have an answer for you question...sorry.

Shasta of the 3 Other Systems NT is slightly faster but the speed gain may not be worth it, if the boxes are going to be RC5 only
linux is your best bet(try Klinux).. if there is not a network card in them try DOS

I use win 2k as my primary OS, so it gives me a small boost in doing so.

I have a K6-2 500MHz that I was getting about 725K k/s with Win98SE.
I switched to Win2K and now I get 849K k/s :)

In addition, the system has been on the same boot for 2 weeks now.

725 to 849 is a heckuva boost....wonder how NT compares with 2K? Maybe I will compare and see. All I need some time, I have everything else. Thanks for all the info.
