  • Roman Pirozek Jr, 19, was an avid RC helicopter hobbyist
  • He specialized in performing dare-devil tricks with his powerful $1,500 model helicopter
  • His own father watched as the blades of the 6-pound RC flyer sliced off a piece of his head
  • He was dead when police arrived

Unfortunately, the helicopter didn't head to where he wanted it to be.

I have a much smaller one and its hard plastic blades still took a nice gouge out of a piece of plywood I had as a launch pad when tilted during take off.

They are basically flying weed whackers except much worse! Every once in a while a person does die from these. I recall some guy in japan a few years back suffering the same fate.

That's nuts. I'd almost want to wear a head peace that had some kind of sensor that would tell the copter to shut off before it got to close..

From the link:
One clip shows him putting his Trex 700 helicopter through incredible tricks. The video culminates with him dropping the $1,500 model from the sky, only to restart the rotor when it is just inches from his head.
My sympathies to his family - no one should lose a child so stupidly, especially in front of him doing something to which the father introduced him - but this certainly sounds like a Darwin Award. Doesn't take a lot of smarts to understand that a 62" 6 pound 2,000 rpm rotor should not be anywhere near your head and to plan accordingly.

I was into these for a few years. I had one nearly as large as the one in the story, but one class size smaller. Mine had carbon fiber blades and had an RPM of 1800. I flew it INTO MY ANKLE! It hurt like absolute shit and I couldn't walk for a week! I could only imagine getting hit in the head by a larger and faster one.

It's very sad...I got recently into plane spotting hobby - photographing aircrafts...
I was amazed about those RC models...I wish, I could have one of those RC A380...that might even need a garage to store a RC model...

Condolences to a father of that kid - father was a vice president of that club...

A very very good hobby and such big of a loss for a family....

Sad..very sad...
