After 160,000 miles, I replaced my beloved '93 Isusu Trooper LS with a 2005 Kia Sorento EX last November ($3500 in incentives vs 2006 when I purchased) and Yesterday, we picked up a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon GT for the wife to replace her 2000 Ford Fucus w/ 100,000 miles.

I must say that I am very impressed with the build quality on the Kia (there was a day I SWORE I would NEVER buy a Kia...not today though🙂 It has been steller going on 5 months now. I was looking at Jeep Liberty and Ford Escape in addition to the Kia. We knew people that owned those models, and noted that the Kia(Sorento) owners would always rave about their rigs, but the Escape owners always bitched. The Jeep Liberty was pretty decent, but the Sorento EX was the better all aound rig to me, and just "felt" much more sturdy.

The Tiburon caught the wife's eye several months ago driving past a displayed model on her way home from work. had ever realy heard of one before, so I did a bit of research, which showed them in a favorable light, especially amoungst owners.

The Ford Focus we bought prior has been plagued by recalls, but despite that has been a decent car that we liked. We weren't considering another, but did have our eye on the Ford Fusion, which looks to be a great car.

The wife wanted something sporty though, she had had a Eagle Talon TSI AWD in the past that she dearly loved and wanted something more in that vein. We looked at Mitsubishi Eclipse, Scion TC and even the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger. In the end, we decided on the Hyundai Tiburon GT, and went ahead and bought it yesterday after driving several models.

I'm 6'2" and the headroom is a bit tight for me. The cockpit feels great driving however, but without a sunroof, I might have a different view. The wife is 5'3", so no problem at all with her. The back seat is "forget it" small however. Fine for the 7 year old, but momma won't be dragging the teenagers around much (this is a bonus LOL). The hatchback has ample space however.

The red instrument lights make the dash very appealing at night, and its laid out very well IMO. Everything about the car seems solid, with the same sort of quality we've noticed in the Kia. In fact many of the design elements are similar, so getting use to the controls was easy after driving the Sorento for months now. The v6 and dual exhaust have a nice throaty sound, and performance is excellent. Visibility is also suprisingly good, the side view mirrors provide nice side views without being obtrusive, the view to the rear is a bit thin on the horizontal, but adequate. I have a long flag-lot driveway, and had no trouble at all navigating it in reverse.

We went with "Alpine White" to contrast the "Ebony Black" Sorento, and I must say, our driveway has NEVER looked so good. The styling on both rigs is outstanding IMO. For well under $50K for both, it sure "feels" like we got alot of value for the money, and with an excellent warranty on both rigs.

No, the Tiburon is FWD. The Sorento is a real 4wheel drive with high/Low range.

Edit: I will add that the lack of neutral for the transfer case makes it (Sorento) a poor pulled/tow vehicle however.

Its the only real truck left in its class with an actual frame. The Sorento is pretty, but its the only rig in its class I would consider for serious off road duties to be honest. There is a bit of a lack of aftermarket parts, but they are steller offroad.

they do have a good rap, but parts out in the country here would be a total nightmare.

You are right about class tho, i'd buy a Toyota Hilux/Mazda Bravo/Mitsubishi Triton ute if i wanted a cheap offroader, and then i'd jump straight to a Prado...but the former are well a class below, and the latter is quite a step up...

Parts are definately a consideration. I have mixed uses for mine, and I live near a Metropolitan area, so parts/Service aren't a big deal. They are somewhat nimble however, this one looks like it could be stock Link

he's about to lose most of his lower front end, possibly the radiator, and some serious supension work..if that isn't chopped 😉 Crappy pic tho 🙁

That's why i'm a Prado whore

Thats something like the LandCruiser here in the States? Outta my league unfortunately. My buddy here at work has an older Landcruiser and its bult like a tank 🙂

The Tibbies have been nice looking cars. I know a guy who's got one of the earlier models and super charged it. He's had quite a few problems with it because they used relativly cheapo parts(Had to change PLUG WIRES because they couldn't keep enough juice to his sparkplugs, a new ground wire for the block for the same reason). But then again they weren't really meant to be super sporty cars. More to carry the image.

However I heard they were going to change the Tibby in the next couple years to be a rear wheel with a supercharged V6 from the factory. Dunno if it's coming to fruitation or not though.

I've seen some sweet looking Tiburon Concepts, but I've no idea about RWD. I don't see why not since the back seat isn't usable IMO, the tunnel for the driveshaft wouldn't be a big deal.

I haven't pushed it around yet, but I'm used to FWD anyway. Its pretty predictable from my brief run "around the lake" (curvy, nice pavement, little traffic) and the performance is nice actually, but I could see performance upgrades being popular. It seems the Scion had some nice factory upgrades including supercharger.

the tibby is a nice vehicle, but the rear seat is useless, i mean USELESS, hence i wouldnt consider it...

my friends own 2, nice vehicle, some parts feel lacking in strength, specifically the inner door handle that i can easily twist and seperate.

Useless for a seat, but very useful for the hatchback, the back seat in my RX7 was useless (OK, nonexistant). Its OK, it for the wifey to drive back and forth to work, and the 2 of us to tool around in, we'll haul the kids in the Sorento. I hadn't noticed the weak inner door handle, just have a hard time finding it because its not where I expect it to be.

Yea, thats a nice lineup 🙂
Prado Grande Features
Refrigerated cooler box
This was certainly not available for the Sorento....niice🙂

The rumor I heard was that Hyundai was going to launch the Sedona themselves, but the Kia badge needed a model to pull it out of the dumps so it launched as a Kia. Looks like a smart move, and now Kia has a little momentum going that might help erase the memories of the early models. Now Hyundai has Azera for a flagship, another winner it looks to me.
