Razer Barracuda AC-1 Sound Card $59.99 @ buy.com

ridiculous. i paid $150 for this 2 months back, and that was a good deal.

unlike the audigy, it does dolby digital live and DTS encoding.

I have an X-Fi XtremeMusic paired with some Logitech z680 speakers.

Would I benefit from this sound card at all? I understand sound is highly subjective, but that is what I'm looking for. Some personal opinions 🙂

Edit: Also need an excuse to use my Buy.com coupon!

Google Checkout $20 off $80.

this soundcard is built for gamers, it uses a directx hack which makes distant directional sound closer than it truely is. Yes, it does work for vista.

if you are a gamer, get this and a pair of e.d.g.e acoustics GX400, and you are set. (hp-1 sucks like shiet, don' t even consider it)

but if you are more into music, i suggest you take a x-fi xtreme music, hard mod it by replacing all of the leaky caps, it'll sound better than this.

I'd also like to know. I have an X-fi ExtremeMusic paired with Klipsch Ultra 5.1 speakers but wonder if this Razer card would sound any better. I'm a gamer, so I'm wondering if the loss of Advanced EAX would be noticeable. It seems EAX isn't used in games nowadays.

i don't see any mention of Vista 😛

Can confirm this card works flawlessly in Vista 64. Updated drivers are available on the Razer site. After dealing with continously bad drivers and the DirectSound/Alchemy schenaneggans in Vista I really wanted to move away from Creative.

This is a great card IMO, especially when paired with the HP-1 headphones. Sound clarity is noticably better than on my older Audigy Xi-Fi (I think I read it's because of the higher quality DACs on the AC-1). The software is very easy to use and offers many options for tweaking.

I know a lot of people don't like the HP-1s, but I've tried a multitude of high-quality headphones, both 2.1 and 5.1 (LTB, Audio Technica, Plantronics) and find them to produce the best sound for gaming and movies, and good sound for music. Maybe it's because of the proprietary digital connection...?

Great deal for 62 clams.

Razer just released some (much needed) new drivers for this card. The old ones had bugs that would cause all the settings for the card to randomly reset themselves on reboot so you'd have to readjust everything, and then when you'd close the setup window it wouldn't disappear off your screen completely. It was highly annoying, but I think the new beta drivers have addressed both of those.

Damn this is tempting...I don't really game on the PC much anymore and have gone the route of the 360, but I really love great sounding music.

Price seems to have gone down to $59.99 with free shipping at the time of posting this.

thanks, i love razer products...got the tarantula cheap (typing heaven), have diamondback and db3g, love them too...

too bad i couldn't get the lachesis side buttons to work properly, (they would only work sometimes), tried two of them, same problem...

so i am in for 1 of these, was thinking 2, but i figure i only need 1 gaming rig...so thank you.

sory... NOOB question here... As far as pulling load off the CPU for sound processing, does this card do as well as an audigy?

I have one of these. It works well, but the latest drivers are still unsigned so if you want sound in Vista 64 you have to boot from F8 every time or uninstall the appropriate updates and run the CMD hack. I am seriously thinking about going to Vista 32 until someone figures out a permanent workouround to the signed drivers issue for Vista 64.

No, you wouldn't benefit at all. The next step up from XtremeMusic is soldering alternative components. Check opinions at head-fi.org 🙂

What? Mine runs perfectly in Vista 64 with these, no work-around needed:

Razer v2.22c (VISTA)

According to the release notes:

Supported Operating System
Windows Vista 32-bit
Windows Vista 64-bit
Driver v2.22c
English

I just uninstalled my driver and reinstalled it from the link you posted to be certain and I still only get sound when I boot from F8. I talked to the Razer Technical Support about the problem approximately 10-days ago and they told me that their Drivers were still unsigned. If your's works then I want to know why mine doesn't. I think I will call Razer again.

That workaround was patched out of existence in a previous Windows update. From what I read it is possible to uninstall 3 or 4 specific updates and then that operation will work from the CMD line. This only works, however, if you don't have SP1. You have to have installed all the updates individually. I haven't had time yet to relocate the list of updates and try it, not to mention that I am not even sure how/where to uninstall a Windows update, I expect I will figure it out. The downside is that you have to run without all your updates installed, though I guess its only a downside if their are security fixes in the updates, which I have no idea if there are or aren't, but I would be willing to risk it to be rid of this annoying forced driver signing inconvenience.

how serendipitous.
I cant figure out the glitching sound on my ip35, so was shopping for a cheapo sound card. 150 off this guys is too hard to pass up it seems... lol.

When I first saw the dvi connector, i got all excited about possible uncompressed audio with some sort of an hdmi adapter... but its just for their stupid dongle. Oh well.

Cant wait to finally have non glitching sound again on my computer.

i just pulled the trigger on this deal too. my daughter bought me the HP-1 headset and this will be a cool addition.
i currently have an audigy 2zs gamer card. the first pair of headphones had a faulty wire for the blue lighted logo so i exchanged them for a new pair.
used them once then the mic was all garbled and had bad static when using team speak. took those back and got another set. used them once then the same thing with the mic. hopefully the card these were designed around will cure that because they really are a comfortable good sounding headset for gaming and movies/music.
