Raxco PerfectDisk stopped doing bootup defrag

I assume many of you use the Raxco PerfectDisk 12.5 to defrag hard drives. I have used it for years. It has the option to do a bootup defrag on the next bootup -- plus it opens a box asking if you would like to bootup now. That has always worked. Suddenly I can't get it to do a bootup defrag. Ordinarily I flag it to defrag on the next bootup and decline when it asks if I wish to reboot now. That no longer works. Same thing if I choose to reboot now. There is also an option on the drive bars to set bootup defrag to on -- that doesn't work either.

Have any of you experienced this problem -- and is there a solution short of uninstalling and reinstalling the software?

Thanks

Uninstalling and reinstalling wouldn't neccessarily solve your problem if another program has modified the registry. Quoted from Raxco's support page:

3rd party programs may modify the BootExecute registry key so that PDBoot.exe is no longer the first entry. PDBoot.exe needs to be the first entry in order for the PerfectDisk boot time defrag to run correctly. To verify that the BootExecute registry key is correct, do the following:

Click on Product Resources
Click Support
Click the Start button to initiate diagnostics
If any issues are identified, click Fix to resolve

If no issues are identified/fixed, please see below for other reasons why the boot time defrag may not be running:

Thought sure you had found a fix. Went to the Raxco site. I do not have any of the programs in the list of known sources for the problem -- but downloaded and ran BlockedFileList.exe anyway. Had no effect. I can't be sure when I lost the ability to do a boottime defrag since I don't run it often. So can't be sure what if any software might be the culprit. This is a very old computer which I use mainly for my word processor and internet so not many software changes get made on it.

Thanks. I will browse arounf Raxco to see if there is anything else that might help.

In the support quote you gave it said

Well there is no BootExecute registry key in my registry and a search for PDBoot.exe shows it isn't in the registry either. Guess that explains why it isn't running -- but not where it went to.

@Gustavus; if you ran the diagnostic, it didn't find any issues, and nothing was fixed, then I'd suggest doing two things: Run Windows Disk Cleanup to delete all temp, recycle, and other junk files then reboot. Second; uninstall PD then reboot and reinstall PD.

What OS are you using? PD 12.5 would not do a boot time defrag with Windows 8, but a patch was made available. I call it 12.5+. Now, PD 12.5+ will not work at all with Windows 8.1. Raxco is working on it, and it will be in PD13.

I have not seen your problem posted on the PD Forum. I monitor that every day.

The latest patch is here. For the Forum, see Support/Online Community.

Good to hear from you again. If that is your picture you may be nearly my age.

I am running Windows XP with SP3 and all updates to the present

Most unsatisfactory solution. Nothing helped so I finally uninstalled Perfect Disk using Your Uninstaller, scrubbed the registry with Wise Care and reinstalled. I can now do boot time defragmentation. Didn't find the problem and didn't learn anything -- but at least the software is working again.

Thanks for the responses.

Glad that it worked. I also have XP, WIn 7 and 8.1. Version 13 should be out in a couple of weeks.

Yeah - the avatar is me - celebrated year 82 a week ago. :)

Sometimes we never know what the problem was. Could be as simp0le as a broken link. Stuff happens!

Well we are closer in age than I thought. I turn 83 in October.

I only use Windows XP. Tried Windows 7 and didn't like it. I use my computer(s) for communication, word processing and math research. The world seems to have gone for graphics and games and I'm not interested in either.
