Ugh. My wife swore she saw a rat the other day out under the carport. So I went and got 2 of the big wooden rat traps and set them using peanut butter. Last night I was just sitting here surfin' when I heard one go off. I was expecting to find a mouse, but whoa! Big nasty rat. These suckers had chewed through the bottom of the plastic garbage cans! This morning I checked the other one and there was an even bigger one in there. Ewwww. So were getting some of the galvanized steel cans. I reset the traps, laid a whole mess of the D-Con bait-poison trays out. Its WAR! Bring it you little beady-eyed freaks!

Anyway, any suggestions?

stick to the traps and do not use poison. if a rat eats poison, scurrys off and then dies you will not know until the smell starts to kick in.

Dont use poison! You may end up killing dogs, cats, hawks, raccoons, skunks, possums, foxes, coyotes etc.
Its not very thoughtful to poison animals you wont dispose of. You cause more harm than good.

Get a cat!

Gas 'em.

Hook up your car exhaust to the dryer vent, close up the house and idle the car for a good forty five minutes.

theres rat poison that makes it so the rats don't smell when they die...but i agree traps are better....or the cheapest way...go to your local humaine society and adopt 2 cats...all you rat probs will be gone

Get a cat. I have one who brought home a small rat the other day. She laid it at our back door as a present. I rewarded her and tossed the dead rat in the trash can.

How to get rid of dead rats? Easy. Just lay them by the side of the road and post a sign "Free rats".

foolproof rat and mouse killing device:
Parts list:
2 or 3 gallon plastic bucket from hardware store, a couple bucks.
wire coat hangar, cheap to free:)
35MM film canister, may be hard to find that in the digital age:p

drill or melt 1/4" holes through bucket on opposite sides near top.
straighten out enough coat hangar to go through those holes and beyond a few inches either side.
Insert wire through bucket, through the cap and end of film canister, and out the other hole in bucket. you may need to use an icepick or small drill bit on the canister, but the idea is a tight fit. Center it in bucket.
Now you have a film canister fixed to a wire that spins freely in the top of a bucket.

Smear a coat of peanut butter on canister. add 3" of water to bucket. make a ramp or two out of sticks, boards, or stuff leading up there. To expidite the process, put a couple smears of peanut butter on ramps if you wish. It is not really necessary.

Place this in any secured place the pets can't get to. the device is harmless, but the dead rats/mice might not be.

I have used this a few times over the years, and it works perfectly. The mice keep coming, trying to get PB, falling off the spool and into the water and drowning. it does not need reset, and it will clear out a whole colony of mice in one evening.
Dump in the toilet for easy cleanup.

no. rats and mice both die in this thing, by the handfuls. traps get picked clean by many rodents and never tripped. and if you do get one, that's it till the next time you reset it. this thing keeps on going one after another .I've dumped 3 or 4 rats or mice after ONE night, and never see another one after that.

This was designed for much larger pests than giant cockroaches but its builder didn't have anything larger to try.

My bet is it would work even NY rats. :Q

Well I have two cats already, but they are indoor only. Well I set 4 more traps, laid out enough bait/poison to kill a herd of buffalo, so we shall see in the morning. I have to work midnights tonight and the Missus is terrified to be home by herself tonight.
