Rather Toasty 6800 GT

A couple of days ago I started noticing slowdowns while playing WoW going from 60-70 fps down to 5 and then back up to 50-60. This would happen every 30 seconds or so.
After messing with every setting within WoW that I could think of that would affect video perfomance I started alt-tabbing out to check the video card settings within windows. I noticed that my card was running at 103 degrees C . I opened my case up and put a fan so that it was blowing directly into the case, that only lowered the temps to 89C 🙁.
So today I plan on taking the card out and removing the heatsink, putting some AS5 on there and reseating it.
Is there anything else I should try or be aware of?
I don't want to try a third party solution just yet. But I am willing to go that method if a simple reseating doesn't work.

The 6800Gts have a knack for getting a lot of dust build up in the Heat sink, you probably just need to pull the card out and give it a good, compressed air dust. I think you will be surprised on how much dust flies out of the heat sink when you spray it with some canned air.

Other users have reported the same problem as you and the cleaning out the fan and HS seemed to fix their problems.

Maybe your problem is something else though but try that first.

Buy an Accelero X2 an NV Silencer 5. Will solve your problem. Zalman VF-700C u or VF-700 AlCu would also do the trick.

Stock cooling on 6800GT's is noisy (usually) and performs poorly.
