cause it would equal up for the 6-8 15 minute smoke breaks that the smokers at my work take everyday.

while doing backups I had to walk by the 'smoker area' 7 times today. EVERY single time I walked across the area the same group of 4 people were out there smoking.

Smoke a pack first thing in the morning, then don't smoke for a whole day, then die craving.

Look at it this way. They are taking time off to spend lots of money to get cancer.

Who's better off?

Um, what are you all whining about? ASK FOR A BREAK. JUST BECAUSE YOU DON"T SMOKE DOESN"T MEAN YOU CANNOT TAKE A SMALL BREAK.

ACTUALLY it does. I'm not sure what my boss would think if I took 1/4 of my day off. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be happy if I left at 3 instead of 5 everyday.

In that case, you have a legitemate grip. I let my employees take small breaks whether they smoke or not.

I've often thought the same thing. It's always the same handful of people standing in the smoking area. It would be interesting to find out exactly how much time they spend away from their desk.

Just because they take breaks doesn't entitle you to be paid for not doing work too. Seriously.

?What?

They're essentially getting paid to stand around smoking. That's stealing, IMO. The company is paying them to work. They're not working, but the company is still paying them.

Right?

Yes, but I was stating that smokers and non smokers get small breaks if they ask me.

ok fine. The other 496 people in the company are working during those breaks.

Or at least... they aren't standing outside puffing cigarettes.

The one thing I LOVE is the shivering in 30 degree weather...

Check your state labor laws to see what you're required by law to take. Your company MUST give you atleast the law's requirement. Beyond that is completely up to your company's discression.

Yes, I know that. I work for a casual dining restaurant, which my family owns. My point is, stop whining, and ask for a small break. If the OP can't deal with it, he should get another job.

Well lthe next time you ask for a raise just state that you are 25% more productive because you don't take smoking breaks left and right like your coworkers. There problem solved.

The thing is, Dairy Queen doesn't get that much business. As the head dishwasher you are not doing them any favors. If you ever that that head fry cook position at McDonald's, where they are busier, you won't be able to let them take so many breaks.
