I have a switch connected to my cable modem. My Cable company allows upto 3 computers with no extra charge.

Questions:

Should I put zonealarm on each computer (if I do will it allow me to play Quake type games and run a server)

Should I buy a router (like the linksys one)and connect through one IP?

Or any other better ideas.

jawaki,

First, you have a generous cable company.:)

Yes, if you are going to assign an IP to each system, and this is a WAN address, you should protect each with a firewall. Now, I am not familiar with the settings in Zone Alarm (I use a router), so someone else will have to address the gaming question.

Since your ISP is providing you with three addresses, this really isn't necessary. But, it might simplify things for you.

As for the zonealarm question, I think you can still play games and run a server... cuz with ZA you can choose which program gets access to the internet, and which can become an internet server also...

However I am not 100% sure... since ZA is free, I suggest d/ling it and trying it out... Worse come worse you can just turn off ZA when you play Quake...
