Rather disappointed in my temps...

I have an MSI Neo2 Plat. board with an A64 3000+ running at 2.4GHz. Initially I was using a TT Tower112 heatsink with a TT UFO 92mm fan and AS5 thermal compound. The temps were around 42 degrees at idle and 55 degrees full load. Well, I swapped that out for a TT Pipe101 Heatsink using the same fan and AS Ceramique thermal compound. Applied the compound using the directions on AS's website. Initially temps looked a lot better, idling around 38 degrees and 49 degrees full load. The temps are suppose to drop over time, but mine are increasing. Now I'm running 44 degrees at idle and 56 degrees full load. What gives? I understand that my temps are still within tolerance, but I still prefer to run below 40 degrees at idle and below 50 degrees under full load. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Just a suggestion, but put it back to stock speeds and see what your temps do. Also, do you have the cool and quiet enabled in your bios?? Turn it off, along with the temp target aspect... I'm getting light load temps of 34-35C right now on my non-overcocked processor... I'll be keeping an eye on my temps too, since if they start to creep up, for no good reason, I'll be contacting Thermatright about it... I really don't want to install the wind-tunnel making tornado fan...

I have the cool n quiet turned off. I couldn't find the temp target aspect. I'm using Bios ver. 1.37mod. Don't know if that makes a difference. Also, I'm using a Lian Li LL Warrior case. I did a little bit of re-arranging of my wires and such(hadn't cleaned that up since putting everything together). That seemed to be blocking some air flow and now I'm back to idling at 40 degrees. I'm gonna run like this for a few days and see what happens. Any other suggestions would be cool though. Thanks.

I've had my system running since Friday evening (after installing the Thermalright cooler) and the most it's idled at (while playing mp3's and downloading large files) is 35C... That's even after the torture test of over an hour (without any errors)... I'm trying to get my idle temps below 30C, not sure if that will ever happen, but I want it...

If you have a TT PIPE101, I have a suggestion you might consider. I emphasize that this does not dismiss other cooling solutions or enhancements, and you may want to consider other things in addition to this.

I now use the ThermalRight XP120. I expected it to do a better job than the TT PIPE101, but it is no better and no worse. Ordinarily, the PIPE101 would not be as good as the XP120, but the situation changes if you put a 120mm fan on the PIPE101. I know -- you say "the PIPE101 is designed for a 92mm fan." True. But -- BUT!! --- You can fit a 120mm-to-92mm acrylic fan adapter to the PIPE101, and add any 120mm fan of your choice. And an advantage of the PIPE101 as opposed to the XP120 -- is that it has an aluminum shroud and a shape that assists in pushing all the air forced through it onto the copper heatsink base before the air is exhausted through the fins.

So there is first of all no reason to replace the PIPE101 with an XP120. You can get the acrylic fan adapter at FrozenCPU for around $10 -- maybe even less. After that, pick a high-throughput, low noise fan, preferably one of low weight like the YS-Tech 120x38mm or a Silverstone 120x25mm. The Silverstone has a monitoring wire with 104CFM; the YS-tech has no monitoring but it provides 125 CFM.

Another thing about the PIPE101 is that it makes the "Foam Board Mod" ducting (see a thread authored by "Sentinel" dated within the last couple weeks) -- easier to design. You may improve your temperatures again by a few degrees C assuming the higher throughput of a 120mm fan gives you a few extra to start with.

PS

Check your fan filters to see if they need cleaning. I know that mine do when the temperatures (idle and load) seem to have increased by as much as 4 degrees F.

The advice provided by others above is also relevant and worth considering.

Never thought about trying a 120mm fan. Great idea. I'll try that. Oh, filters are clean(I clean them as well when idle temps increase a bit). Thanks.

bought an acrylic fan adapter along with a panaflo M1A 120mm fan. Temps don't seem any better. No worse, but not any better. The fan is stinkin' huge though. It barely fit with my video card just below it.

Which way would be best? Having the fan blow onto the heatsink or pull away from? I have it blowing onto the heatsink itself.
