Here is what I have to start with, and I have a small budget $500-$600 for the rest. The parts I will be bringing over to the new system:
Antec Solution SLK3000-B Black Computer Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129152
2 sticks WINTEC AMPO 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820161615
NEC 3520a dvd burner.
And a Maxtor 250GB Hard drive.

And now the new stuff:

Motherboard/Graphics card
eVGA e-Geforce 7800 GT PCI Express 256MB DDR3,Free eVGA 133-K8-NF41 $359.00 shipped
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ShoppingCart.jsp

My question about the MB, it doesn't come with firewire, how expensive/difficult is it to add firewire to a computer (I have always had it onboard).

CPU
Either an opteron 146 retail for $165 (locally from a friend but it is backordered for probably 1-2 weeks.) or a 3200+ Venice for $160

PSU
XCLIO XClio-480BL 480W Power Supply 71.00 shipped

I don't plan on overclocking but you never know, so is the opteron that much better than the venice that I should wait for it to come back in stock?

Firewire PCI cards are 30$ at bestbuy/compusa - normally needed only for video capture from digicams

The ram is budget stuff that has run stable for me for over a year, and the Xclio got rave reviews on anandtech, I will eventually upgrade the ram but it isn't in the budget ehis go around. I forgot to say that I am playing BF2 right now almost exclusively so I hope this would be sufficent.

I heard mixed reviews here on that bundled mobo. For a few bucks more, you can (at least this weekend) get a MSI 7800GT $270 after rebate and a Epox 9NPA+ for $108. The Epox, from the reviews in the Forum here, is a much better board than the bundled eVGA board.

1. the opteron is worth the wait

2. firewire is NOT $30. look in the newspaper. at least once per week you can find it at fry's fr $10-15 (no rebate) for a pci slot firewire thing. i got it for $15 back in 2003 for 3 firewire ports

Perfect. You may get other suggestions for the PSU. and personally see the Fortron 450w recommended tons and its around the same price, but either or will work fine I'm sure.

Thanks for the heads up about the 148 + 7800GT actually, I may jump on it myself.
