I'd really suggest you get another GB of memory, BF2 stutters badly without it

ah wise man, you remind me, thank you

Use:
AMD Athlon 64 San Diego 3700+
Thermalright XP-90 OEM Heatsink w/ Panaflo H1B 92mm fan + Arctic SIlver 5 (www.jab-tech.com has all this for 44 USD shipped)
Either 2x Twinmos Speed Premium PC3200 512mb (if you want tight timings but only DDR500 speed)
or 1 GB Kit 2x512mb OCZ Platinum Rev2 (if you want 3-4-4 timings but be able to hit DDR600 speed)
For the video card, wait and see what ATI has to offer first.
Get a OCZ Powerstream 520w powersupply

Yeah, don't bother with 512 mb sticks, especially if you're going to play BF2. 2GB all the way, that's the first thing you should do.

no reason in waiting for ati's version of video card. why wait for a small change in performance, if any? price wont be any different.

Get 2x 1GB sticks - they can overclock well (Crucial Ballistix and even Crucial Value) at low voltages.

The 2T thing isn't good to go for. Overclocking with all 4 dimms populated you will be stuck at 2T - while that's not as important for single core as they are far from being bandiwdth starved if you every migrate to X2 it will make a far more significant difference. Quite simply, the X2 will undoubtedly benefit from higher fsbs and lower latencies and so given the memory controller cannot handle high fsb and low timings you will not have the same performance as someone operating 1GB sticks at 250mhz at 3-3-3.

Moreover, I'd go for a 3000+ Venice and then save what cash I did for dual core which will become more important in a year. The 3000 won't be far off you're San Diego in reality while dual-core is clearly far superior in the longer term - win-win.

Please have a look at Crucial Sticks

2T will not make a difference for him performance wise, don't you dare try to convince him otherwise when it has been proven that it won't.
