Rate my System for Windows7 and Should I upgrade

Basically I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on my main desktop. It has 4800+ Core 2 Duo, 2GB Ram, 250 GB HDrive. I am thinking about moving to Windows 7, but my main concern is how this system will handle Windows 7? Will it run like pooop, are am I in a good range. One thing I like about Ubuntu is that it runs really fast and is stable. I have to run virtualbox within Ubuntu to run XP to run some must have applications I can not get away from. I love Ubuntu, but am using a MS product anyways by running Virtualbox. Sorry Microsoft I am not giving Ubuntu up on my laptop though 😛

What's a 4800+ Core 2 Duo? Do you mean an Athlon 64 4800+? It should run Windows 7 just fine. I'd consider upgrading to 4gb of RAM if you can though as Windows 7 really does benefit from it. It will run ok on 2gb though.

You can start with your current system as is, it should work very well.

Whether you should benefit from more memory depends on what you are running 2GB would work well for all mundane tasks. However since you want to do Virtual you should add more memory.

If you get Win 7 Ultimate/Enterprise/Pro you can install the free XP Mode. It works as a seamless Virtual PC and it is smoother and faster than other Virtual software on Win 7.

The VPC part can run Win2000, and Vista too (if needed).

Yeah; sorry I meant Athlon 64 4800+

I have an HTPC running Windows 7 with an Athlon x2 4600...runs fine with 2 GB RAM and an Nvidia 7900gt. Plenty good with Blue ray even...I have an addon soundcard also.

I used a Opteron 180 which is the same as a Athlon64 X2 4800 and Windows 7 ran very well. I was honestly surprised by how well my old Socket 939 system 2GB memory ran Windows 7.

I loaded Windows 7 64 bit with a 4800+ w/ 2gigs of ram... When multitasking at times the system feels a little sluggish. I look at task manager and there is only 1200-1500 MB ram being utilized. Will adding another 2 gigs make the system any faster? Thanks.

yes definitely should run well. I'd upgrade the ram though if at all possible. i have 4GB on mine and it is pretty sweet!

That system will run Windows 7 beautifully. I have been running it on a older, single core, Athlon XP based Sempron CPU with onboard graphics and one gig of RAM and Windows 7 runs better on the system than XP does with full Aero goodness and all. (Aero is a little choppy due to the weakness of the onboard graphics and I only alloted 128 MB of RAM to video in the bios.)

One thing to remember : the 64-bit versions of Vista and Win7 use a bit more ram than the 32-bit versions. Given that it's nearly 2010 and 64-bit support is VERY good overall, it makes sense to go that way. 2GB of ram is decent, 4GB is excellent.
