Asus Rampage Formula
eVga 9800GX2
DDR2 1066Mhz 2GB x 4
WD Raptor 150GB
Seagate 750GB x 2
PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W

May I suggest the veloci raptor instead of the raptor 150gb? Maybe change the Seagates to the Samsung F1 1TB, but up to you. Everything else looks really good, although I personally dont like dual card gpu's such as the 9800gx2, maybe wait for the 4870.

9800gx2 looks better on paper than gt260, but I'd get the single next generation card over the old tech sandwich card every time. If you're buying now then you'd have to use your current card for a week or two until gtx 260 comes out, but it'd probably be worth the wait for you. Also, in a couple of weeks 4870 should be out, offering similar/better performance to gtx 260 for ~ $299. In fact, if you're dead set on that x48 mobo, the 4870 will probably be a better choice for you anyway as you could crossfire it later on if you wanted/needed that.

i'd wait to see how the 4870 does in reviews, looks like it maybe a great price performance ratio

Anything you have against the dual?
I was looking at the GT280 but it is louder and have higher power consumption.

I am looking for a quiet system, well in this case, as quiet as I can get it.

The GTX280 is a better buy than the 9800GX2 (this product has reached EOL btw). A single GPU card will always have less headaches than the 9800GX2 which is a multi GPU card that comes with its own issues due to the nature of multi GPU cards. The great thing about the GTX280 is that it uses no less than 50W idle (remaining very cool and silent), and only fully powers up during load i.e playing an 3d intensive game. The GX2 doesn't have this feature i.e it will consume alot of power even at idle.

Yes the GTX 280 does have higher power consumption but according to AT, the difference is roughly 23Ws. Some people have said here that its a waste and should wait for the 55nm version. Well id say it will take around 3 or more months to make that transition. I do think that the 55nm versions will be just a simple die shrink i.e have similiar performance figures to the 65nm versions. (I guess they could be clocked higher)

As for the SLi motherboard, well its up to you depending whether or not you want multi GPU setup. But i can guarantee that the GTX 280 SLi setup will provide the required performance for a long time to come just like the 8800GTX in SLi. Also note that dual GPUs will always be more reliable and consistent compared to 3 or 4 GPU setups. (Scaling gets worse and worse when you go past 2 GPUs).

Getting SLi, then i think the HX1000 is a must. Its quiet, stylish and considered to be one of the best PSUs money can buy. Being modular is just icying on the cake really.

Another recommendation id you need to get maybe get a 1k PSU if yo intend to go 280 GTX SLI, from many reviews it seems that is a real power hungry setup. If you go single card, I think 750W is plenty.

Is it still true that four sticks run slower than two, and that 1GB sticks are faster than 2GB sticks? If so I suggest you ditch some of that memory because you will NOT need 8GB for games for many many years and you can save some money. Plus you will be able to push your processor that bit further with a more tolerant memory subsystem.

Well 4 sticks technically will not run slower, but they might in real life due to motherboard chipset limitations, as 4 sticks puts a lot of extra stress on the motherboard, so you will have to increase voltages and if that doesnt work you will have to loosen timings, and maybe downclock as well which would mean it will run slower. 1gb sticks can oc higher than the higher density 2gb sticks, but the perf difference is minimal. I would grab 8gb if you are keeping the system long, since ddr2 is so cheap nowadays.

Thank you for the advice, I dont think I will be doing SLI so 750w PC Power and Cooling should be enough??
Also, will Asus Rampage still be the ideal choice for no SLI setup? moderate OC?

Also, will be getting the Samsung 2493HM.

I'd recomment an Asus Maximus II Formula mobo using the X48 chipset and 2 HD 4870s in Crossfire. These cards are alot cheaper than the GeForce GTX 280 and are on par in performance. By the way, I own 2 XFX GeForce 8800GTs in SLI.🙂
