Go salt or go home.
Not good enough a keeper to go salt. There's more know how, expenses, etc. Thought about going brakish(green spotted puffer) but it would fail imo. Maybe one day

With a tiny fish like a betta, I only have to do minimal water changes

Go salt or go home.
I had a 75g reef tank with a 20g sump for six years and all I can say is fuck that. All I can say is yeah they look great when regularly maintained but holy shit the regular maintenance is non stop and the equipment that is needed is just as bad and expensive as hell. All I can say is never again.....Come to think of it that's any aquarium I've ever had whether it was fresh or salt. They are always a pain in the ass to maintain even if they look pretty.

There's no filter running yet, no fish yet. The old inhabitants have passed due to natural causes(clawed frogs) Honestly, they probably could have lived longer if i replaced the filter that stopped working, but too late now. I overestimated how hardy they were. I was under the assumption that the species evolved in sewers. Anyway They lived good lives imo. Spawned a bunch of tadpoles that i couldn't keep

dude, wtf?

you killed your frogs.

Your aquarium looks like the home aquaculture version of the Saw film franchise.

All I can say is, THANK GOD you don't have kids...

(I don't either, for the very same reasons. I'm lazy, and can barely take care of myself and my own apt.)

Edit: To re-state, this time in a positive tone:

I'm glad that you are caring for frogs, and fishes, and thus will hopefully eventually learn to be responsible enough to care for humans.

amen
I don't plan to bring an intelligent lifeform like another human into this current world, assuming my goal was to procreate

I don't think it's like something from the Saw film series as mentioned earlier. Maybe like one of Dennis Hopper's fluid filled jars in Waterworld.

That’s another factor—the not having kids yet thing. Instead, millennials are becoming “plant parents” to aloe vera and rubber plants, to succulents and birds of paradise. Bringing these species into the home is an added responsibility, yes, but it’s nowhere near as involved as having a child is (there also isn’t nearly as much pressure to keep a plant alive as there is a living human being). If anything, it helps prepare you for even more responsibility to come. Maybe your plant serves as a gateway to getting a pet, which is then a step closer to having kids. Or, maybe it serves as nothing more than something you can care for, watch grow, love… and show off.

Maybe get some plants?

bump, I'm gonna start the process of cycling the tank soon, Waiting for ammonia chloride to arrive in the mail. I'm no longer gonna keep a beta fish, going with gold fish

Have you tried live lava rock and live sand. My college roommate was able to keep the water pristine with lots of live lava rock and sand. And with only running one cannister filter.

It seemed like he hardly had too maintain it. And the water was always crystal clear

I didn't say fill the aquarium with water...

As you can tell from the updated pic, I've already filled it up with water with a running filter. The cycling process has yet to begin. Waiting for ammonia chloride to arrive

My noob mistake was i didn't cycle the tank first time around. When the aquarium is seasoned, the livestock will be much healthier, live longer lives. My frogs got sick cause the system wasn't cycled. This is gonna take like 2 months. Just gotta be patient

Got a bottle of this

ammonia chloride, to develop beneficial bacteria for controllling nitrates and ammonia in the system
