Rat in toilet

Yesterday, my roommate and I came home from work. We were upstairs just chatting, when my other roommate came home and went downstairs (we live in a small duplex in NYC) to change and then we heard her shriek. We ran down the stairs, and it was almost surreal. There was a 7 inch rat, with a tail just about as long, in the toliet bowl, with a few pellet sized turds floating about its head. It was dead and we think it came through the pipe dead, but the turds floating around it makes me think it might have had a struggle and the strain might have caused it to expel its turds. I dunno. lol

It's was so nasty. The last thing I want to feel is that something is going to take a nip at my bum next time i use the bathroom. Anyhow, we fished it out with a 2-litre coke bottle that we cut the end off of, and a stick and dropped it into a box. I'm sorry I know the thread is kind of useless without pics, but none of us own a digital camera yet 🙁

It was just so sick tho, so surreal. We called our super, but he's such a jerk and didn't call back. I wonder what we can do to make sure that all the entrances into the pipes are protected.

Edit: typo

when you die your muscles relax, including your butt muscle.

pics of the roommate?

Is it even possible for a rat to come up-pipe from a toilet? You should have tried to flush it to see if it would even fit back down. I would say it's most likely it came from within the apartment. If I were you I would put some rat traps around your place.

Couldn't you do what you needed to do to "protect" the pipes and take it out of your rent? IF the super won't do anything about it...because...that's messed up.

What is he going to do to protect the pipes?

Tom

you cant protect the pipes. there might have been a clog in the sewage system and perhaps the super could look into this to avoid and furture issues that may end up being more costly

My grandma had the same thing happen in her toilet, but the rat was alive. This happened about 10 years ago and ever since, before bed, she puts a dictionary on the toilet seat cover to keep it closed in case another rat comes through. It is hilarious.

The rat didn't swim up the shitpipe.

bingo.

The rat was just trying to get a drink and fell in.

The rat didn't come up the pipe, it was in your house already.

But how? I mean, the thing is, we live in a tiny apartment and the presence of a rat would be so easily detectable. It was huge. We have no droppings around the place or anything. Also, it would be impossible for it to climb into the bowl if it couldn't even climb out. The incline on the way out is much easier than climbing in.

Agreed.

It would be damn near impossible for a rat to travel up the sewage pipe into the toilet.

Do you have any open area in the walls where pipes from sinks or electrical or gas conduits come in? Even though it was big, it could probably squeeze through a half inch opening. Stuff any open areas like that with lots of steel wool. Trust me, rats and mice are sneaky creatures, if they want to get somewhere, they'll figure out a way to get there.

I think it would be easier for a rat to climb into a toilet as opposed to it swimming through the sewage and into someone's toilet. Maybe it climbed up the vanity or a wall and jumped in

hmm. That's a good point. I honestly don't think we have any holes, but I'm going to check. Man, i hate rats 🙁
