no, the cat didn't kill it, they were just staring at each other.

we didn't flush it, i grabbed it, threw it in a pot my wife was holding and then ran across the street to a sewer drain, then we topsized the pot on top of it, and left the pot, for a homeless person to enjoy

Lame.

At least you didn't use rat poison like I did. Man, that smelled for a week and I had a nice batch of flies about a week and a half ago.

He could come back to haunt you while you're dropping a log.

Getting back to toilets, you do have a problem if your john is at ground level or in the basement--that is, where the soil pipe runs horizontally or at a very shallow angle to the sewer. Rats are good underwater swimmers, and it's no problem--believe it or not, they actually have movies of this--for rats to stroll along a horizontal soil pipe from the sewer, swim through the water-filled piping inside the toilet, and emerge in the toilet bowl. If the soil pipe runs vertically for five or six feet or more, though, you're probably safe.

Keep a couple of things in mind...

The rat COULD have come from the sewer...and up through your toilet.

Where there's one rat...there's usually a dozen or more, just waiting...

Now that you released the "test-rat" alive and unharmed, your place will be marked as "For a good time, call..."

gawd i always had a paranoia about that for the longest time after watching this movie where snakes climbed up through the toilet and bit someone's arse while having a noice defecation session.
and then i saw news stories about it

That's nature's subtle hint that you've started building too far into wildlife habitats.

It'll die in a few days.

Its a rat, give it a few days and it'll probably chew through the drywall and run into the bedroom or something :)
