lab rats show empathy

the free rat learned it could release its friend by nudging the container door open.

To the researchers' surprise, when presented with both a rat-holding container and a one containing chocolate — the rats' favorite snack — the rodents not only chose to open both containers, but also to share the treats they liberated.

We better hope that bats don't learn this trick too.

Rats make great pets if they are hand-raised and you stick to females. Boy rats pee on stuff. We always had girls who when let out were smart enough to return to their cages to do their business. Some of them even learned to come when called for pets and a treat. I had a couple that were so sweet they would climb up on your shoulder, nuzzle against your ear and eventually fall asleep. They are very social and don't do well alone. We always had at least two at a time, if not more. When one is getting old and close to dying I've seen the others help her out by building a nest around her and making her comfortable until she passes.
