RASPPPoE, should I install?

I've read all the documentation with it, and all the stuff on their web page, but I still don't know if I should use it. Is there a benefit to using this over the one I have installed already (the one that installs automatically)? How is it beneficial?

I have a Intel 2100 pro DSL modem (internal) that uses PPPoe.
Thanks

Before I used RASPPPoE, I was using Enternet from my ISP.

Enternet works very well with Win9X platform but not as stable in WinNT/2000 Platforms.
RASPPPoE is VERY stable in Win2000, also allows you to use Win2000's built in ICS with Dialup on demand.

Some people say RAS actually is faster than Enternet and yes, I do find out I get about 5-6kb/s MORE when using RAS.

Whats important is that your ISP supports RAS. If your ISP supports RAS, and you are using Win2000, do use RAS. If you are using Win9X, stick to watever you are using.

I recommend RASPPPOE unquestionably for all platforms INCLUDING 9X. Much smaller footprint than the other PPPOE software and faster too.

My DSL connection was plagued with problems for the first few weeks, and I couldn't figure out what the hell was wrong. Sometimes I coudn't connect at all, receiving cryptic "The port is not open" errors. Other times the connection would just die; I'd still be connected, but none of my apps could access the net. Then I read about WinPoET's issues with Win2k and decided to give RASPPPOE a try. Damn if I'm not connected immediately after opening IE and my throughput hasn't gone up by ~5kps!

I can't recommend RASPPPOE enough :)

Does Bell Atlantic (Verizon) DSL support RASPPPoE? I am currently using the newest version of WinPoet that they sent me. I am running Win98SE.

Where do I find a copy of RAS, and what version should I get for Win2000. The Access Manager I have from my ISP (Bell Sympatico) is very unstable in Win2000

Thanks for the info and the link.

I was able to install the driver easily (Easier than the Bloatware I received from my ISP) and it seems I am running faster. I expect it to be a lot more stable since it was written for Win2k.

Thanks again.

Forgive my incompetance, but I haven't delt with PPP or Slip or any of that stuff since back in the day when I had dial up. So anyway, what exacly is this software for?

I have PacBell DSL in the SF Bay Area and I don't recall having to install any software for it. Is this for only certain providers or what?

Thanks for any info.

EDIT:

Well nevermind, had I bothered to scroll down on their web page before posting my question, I would have noticed the following:

<<
FAQ 1. What is this? Do I need it?

This is a PPP over Ethernet (short: PPPoE) implementation for Windows 98/98SE/ME/2000. PPPoE as a method for establishing PPP connections through Ethernet adapters is described in RFC 2516 and is used by many broadband service providers to allow authentication and maintain the familiar "dial-up experience" when connecting to the Internet through a broadband modem. Note, however, that not all broadband service providers use PPPoE. If you know you need PPPoE to connect to your service provider and you happen to be using one of the supported operating systems, this implementation could be of interest to you.

I have (argh!) Prodigy DSL(?) and they originally sent Winpoet with their spyware bloated in. Had lots of problems with software and hardware (modems and the CO itself). I tried Enternet 300 plain and it was much faster but could not connect to the Home page (gee no "rich content"). After 2 weeks of enjoying the additional speed it stopped authenticating my password. Called tech support and they said it probably was a corrupt password file. Spent several days on phone unable to contact anyone with knowledge beyond reinstalling software. Reinstalled Winpoet and all was fine. Recenty Prodigy converted to Enternet (added their interface and "nose" of course).
Plan to try Enternet 300 plain again and have had RAS site in my favorites for months to check out. All in all avoid Prodigy (Southwestern Bell SBC).

RASPPPoE is awesome. It works on Verizon so don't worry.

Like other guys said I immediately got faster throughput and more stable connections on both Win2K and 98.

Get rid of that bloatware WinPoet and get RASPPPOE.

It is GREAT software, I found Winpoet also to be far superior to Enternet. It's the MediaPlayer of PPPOE software.

I am going to install RASPPPoE right now. Wish me luck. :)

EDIT: I couldn't get it to work. I uninstalled WinPoet and rebooted. I kept getting an error message related to WinPoet not being there. I reinstalled the drivers for my DSL modem, because they seemed to disappear once I uninstalled WinPoet. I followed the instructions for RASPPPoE and could connect, but I couldn't do anything. It was as if the connection wasn't even there. After trying different stuff and rebooting it a bunch of times, I got pissed and uninstalled RASPPPoE and reinstalled WinPoet. :|

Try reinstall WinPoet then uninstalling it again. I think you must make sure you dont get that error msg about WinPoet not being there first. Maybe last time the uninstall screwed up so you give the uninstall a 2nd go.

Nothing needs to be installed before RAS. Just your NIC driver is ALL it needs. As far as I know, there is never any 'driver' for a DSL modem. There is no need.

xtreme2k,

My DSL modem is internal. I have a Speedstream 3060 from Efficient Networks and it does indeed have drivers. Maybe that is what the problem is. Anyone using RASPPPoE with an internal modem? I am sure it works like a champ with an external modem that connects through a NIC.
