We don't have a common language in America any more. Even the word "PC" means different things to different people and groups. White Americans speak a different language than black Americans. Conservatives speak a different language than liberals. Rich people speak a different language than the poor or the middle class. Politicians speak a different language than the voters. There is less and less agreement on words and their meaning anymore. With no basis for discussion, everyone just takes up positions and hurls insults at each other. (case in point: this thread) Outrage and identity politics has replaced discussion. With the advent of social media, we need to see if we can find common ground for talking in America again.

Social media as it exists today is not really dialogue. It's a safe distance sometimes anonymous outlet to state series of sound-bite, zinger, gotcha monologues, where tone gets misconstrued and listening isn't designed to occur. It, more than any other factor, is the cause of the renewed PC wars. Step away from the keyboard. See how much better we get along with real human conversations. I would love to see some people on social media call their conservative or liberal leaning sweet little old grandma a "right wing nutjob" or a " SJW libtard" to their face.

People are free to think anything they want about other people's speech. They are free to behave in any LEGAL way toward it. But if every group that is offended begins to demand silence for speech it does not like, then you go down the slippery slope of having less speech.
