Raptors- Raid 0 performance??

Tested out my new raptors in raid- 0 last night. I'm fairly happy.

HDTach v.2.70 gives me:

Random access time of 9.2ms (vs. my old 80gb SE that was 13+ms.)
Burst speed was 175.5mb/s.
The avg. read speed was 122mb/s (with only a 5.3% CPU utilization.)

Sandra 2004 was not so friendly??

46K?? when avg. Raid- 0 is almost 70K??

Is this due to my stripe set to 16k (XP cluster is default at 4k). I don't want to have to Image this thing if something is not wrong and start over. Is it likely that sandra 2004 just doesn't work that well, or is my setup not right??

You're fine and the 16K will be more beneficial for larger files. If you do huge Vids then you may want to up it to 32 or even 64.

Thats a nice speed! I have my two Maxtor's in RAID 0, and they give me bursts to 70.8Mb/s
But the average is 55.5Mb/s. And I'm happy with that! ;)

I thought the HDTach scores were good. I want to try PCMark and ATTO benchmarks. If the setup is on par with those benchmarks, I'm not going to get hung up about Sandra bench score. It's still blazing fast!!

Loaded XP in less than 10 minutes from a fresh format!!

Yeah, Sandra doesn't seem to be any good for benching hard drives, at least with the Raptors in RAID. I also got numbers that looked slow in Sandra, but your HDTach numbers look really good! I might have to change my stripe size to see if I can get closer to that (my numbers are slightly higher than guidot's, which are still pretty darn good).

I have Partition Magic 8, and I'm going to resize my stripe/cluster from 16/4 to 16/8 and 16/16, and see what performs better. Post back later.

I knew it didn't "feel" as slow as Sandra shows!! I still can't see why some people runningRaptors' in Raid- 0 are scoring very high on Sandra??

Storage Review should do an article about the new raptors in raid 0, comparing stripe sizes and controller performance (integrated chipset, mb, seperate PCI, etc.)

Well hey why can't Anand Tech do it?

I'd like to know this also. I have a pair of 36GB Raptors waiting for my new motherboard and processor (hopefully to be delivered today or tomorrow).

OK- 16/16 is definetly faster than 16/4.

16/4 ATTO scores peaked at ~ 145K around 128-256mb transfers.

16/16 they peaked ~ 155K in the same area.

HDTach- burst and avg. were the same at both settings, but access time went from 9.2ms to 8.5ms.

Sandra is now scoring ~60K. Test must be sensitive to stripe/cluster settings, as it uses 512mb transfers of data. I wish I could set the transfer size to 128 or 256mb and run Sandra. In Atto bench- mb/s fell off to 120mb/s past 512mb transfers. Sandra probably does not hit this setups sweetspot.

How do you change the cluster size? I thought that was determined by the filesystem.

Magic..... Partition Magic 8......

On the fly- best $30 I've spent in this hobby.

I did one more test- 16/8, and it's the best yet on Atto- 167K mb/s peak transfers on 16mb files, 135K mb/s on 32mb files. access times are great and HDTach is 175mb/s burst still, w/ 120Kmb/s avg.

Testing is done- I think??

Very cool...thanks for the results and work

perhaps you should post all your results in one reply, I know I am interested in reading them.

Thanks again

Sad thing about WD is they never improve there harddrives. As bigger ones come out they add improvements but never upgrade their old ones. As a result, there 74gig harddrive is faster in general then the 36.

Just checking...

yep the 36gb models. Bought one on the forum and one from newegg this week. I like the 5 yr warranty. Hopefully I don't need to use it.

I'll edit my top post later on all the results.
