Raptor vs. Raid 0

My main question if anyone could help me is if one 74gb raptor is faster than 2 SATAII hard drives in raid 0.

What benchmark utilities can i use to test the seek/access time of my current setup (the aforementioned raid)?

not exactly what you're asking for, but it will give u a general idea of what raid 0 does

WD Raptor, to save youself some headache in case the RAID breaks down, and lose all data

The typical user should not be using raid 0 unless they are constatntly backing they information to a seperate harddrive.

Yet with that said -- I for one us raid0 and anything I want to keep or am worried about possibly losing I already have on a 3rd hard drive!!

I have never had any issues with raid0...even though we know that usually one heardrive fails you lose everything!!

Even if you keep things backed up, RAID-0 just doesn't offer a performance benefit to typical users.

Thats an opinion that is widely disputed!!
I personally see a performance difference!!

Peace!!

Anandtech has routinely had articles showing little to no performance benefit for single-user machines. I used to put links into messages like this, but eventually, alas, the question gets asked so frequently ...

I'd get a single 500GB $99 drive and be happy with it. :)

I mainly use my pc for gaming. Would the lone raptor be better than my current setup of 2 SATAII 16mb WD hard drives in raid 0?

Thats right Anand has had articles but the problem with such articles is the many legions of people who swear that a raid0 config will give you a performanc benefit...

Then that reminds me of all the people who claim that a given heatsink is the best....

I maintain and will always maintain that there truly is no Best heatsink...

yet at the same time i appreicate the work BonzaiDuck does with heatsinks and the mathematical part of the whole issue!!

Peace!!

Nowhere in the article did I read the word "stupid". Is that just your off-handed commentary?
If people understand the potential pitfalls of a RAID 0 setup and are ready to accept those risks...
Who are you or anyone to berate them for their decision?
Why not just say that RAID 0 is not an option that you prefer, and leave it at that?

Anybody who says I should split my two raptors into two separate drives is stupid. Surely there's no performance benefit of non-RAID mode :)

Yes, the word stupid was my word. Raid 0 with two drives in a workstation box is stupid, IMHO. Who are you to tell me my determination is not an option for me to have?

Is the array built with twin Raptors?
Do you also have a shot of sustained or average transfer speed for the Raptor vs RAID 0?

EDIT Two Raptors 74Gb vs. one.
So do you RAID 0 users run HDTach and benchmarks all day for fun?

Or do you get actual work done?

Both Raptors (single drive, dual drive RAID0) and RAID0 are a waste of time. As someone said before, get a $99 500GB drive and be happy.

I am already happy, and actually my Raptors save time... I have 250GB drive which is slow, compared with raptors, useless for anything but storage of large files.

Why are you to decide for me what is best for me?

You know, I'm considering adding the 3rd one for RAID5...

Once you get Raptor(s), you never want to go back.

No pictures of the Raptors saving you time?

I just posed one. Everytime Raptor cuts I/O operation in half, I have time to do other things.

And it even took less time to install and configure, real winner, isn't it?

Now, do you have one?

What's up with all the Raptor & RAID bashing?
If people know or even believe they save time and increase performance, what's it to you?

Should we start bashing Corsair & Seasonic PS just because there are better?

No, it is because they think they got better deal with huge hard drive and fast on paper, but in reality it clogs up when you try to open two programs at same time. They simply think there's nothing better because they don't know for it.

I had a rich friend who was feeding exactly same food to her cats every day... not even giving them a single treat in their lifetime. I asked he why, she said they don't know for any better.

Draw your parallels.
