Hi,

Just finished some knee-jerk bidding on ebay for a raptor ($108) and now am thinking what the heck did I just buy. I know the benchs are all great and whatnot, but should I have got this? I intend to put this in a gaming-only rig, but the $/gb seems so high.

Will I actually notice in game performance boost vs. say a Seagate 500gb 7200.10, or is the speed differential negligible when actually playing in real time? Will this help me for a game like Crysis, Oblivion, Far Cry, etc?

I definitely didn't expect to sit down at the computer today to dish out a bill on ANOTHER hard drive (i have a few segates laying around)

Thanks,
Mr. Stupid Buyer

yes, u will notice a speed increase in OVERALL system usage such as windows boot up and shutdown times, virus/spyware scan times, defrag times, GAME LOAD TIMES etc.
no, it will not give u any higher fps in any games, but will help with loading up the game, server map changes, and game installation times.

keep in mind that the hdd is the biggest bottleneck in ANY computer system, and the big bucks u pay for the raptor is where u see the benefits of upgrading that bottleneck.

how about in game loading, like objects appearing and viewing distance?

my other option was take my 400gb seagate im not even using, so its free seagate vs. $108 raptor at this point; if that money is worth it

I've been using raptors as system/game drives in my systems for a couple years now and the difference is very noticable. Although I'd never buy a HD off ebay, I think you'll be happy with the performance in the long run. $108 isn't that much money in the grand scheme of things. I'd say stop second-guessing your purchase and just use the drive and enjoy the increased speed of the Raptor.

$108 for a 150 GB Raptor :Q

Nice price if so!

Enjoy the snappiness it'll provide as an OS drive.

As others said, that's a great deal on a Raptor. Worst case scenario, if you decide it's not right for you, you should be able to recoup your cost easily.

As far as viewing distance, I don't believe those kinds of things need to be loaded from hard drive in real time. That's what the loading time between levels/maps is for.

wow $108 for the 150 you got a great deal!!

in my wife's pc I used a raptor 150 and (I have no fancy testing proof) but it's quite a bit faster than when I had a 7200rpm hd in loading up and her games

You will definitely notice a difference. It was like night and day when I went from an 80GB Western Digital 7200 drive to the Raptor as my main drive. The only con I can think of is that the Raptor is quite loud when reading/writing. Plus you got an amazing deal. I paid over $200 for my Raptor 150 when I got it.
