Ordinarily I'd download the A8V Deluxe's manual to help with this, but the boneheads at Asus don't have it available for download yet :frown: Anyway, there should be two sets of SATA plugs, one set that's operated by the southbridge itself and another that's operated by the soldered-down add-on SATA controller. Which one is your drive plugged into, for starters, and which driver diskette did you make, the one for the native VIA controller or the one for the add-on controller?

I think you made the driver diskette incorrectly. I'm in the middle of making supper but I'll take a closer look when I'm done :) BTW, I see you cross-posted this to the General Hardware section... that's kind of annoying and you might want to give your first thread a day before you jump ship and repost elsewhere ;)

Holy cow, the driver package is a 7MB download :Q I'm going to make an assumption here, that the A8V Deluxe is somewhat similar to the K8V Deluxe. So do this:

1) throw the Asus motherboard's CD into a working system, then click Start > Find and find files named Makedisk.exe on the motherboard's CD.

2) note the folders that the different Makedisk.exe versions are located in. One of them should be named with "VIA" in its name

3) run that Makedisk.exe to make a driver floppy with the VIA drivers on it.

4) fire up the system and hit Del to get into the BIOS. The board should first run through its different disk controllers. Note whether your drive is picked up, and by which one (VIA or the other one).

5) once you're into the BIOS, go to the Advanced section, then into the Onboard Devices Configuration sub-section. In there, make sure OnChip SATA BOOTROM is enabled, then escape out of the menu, save & exit.

6) now try running Windows Setup and hitting the F6 key when it says to, then feed it your new driver floppy with the VIA drivers on it, and let me know what happens :) I think you will not need to enter the VIA SATA BIOS to set the drive as an array, but you might... we'll cross that bridge when we come to it if the above stuff isn't working.

You did all the Promise drivers? But I was under the impression that your SATA drive was not plugged into the Promise controller at all. It's plugged into the VIA controller, hence my instructions to seek out the VIA version of Makedisk.exe and run it to make a VIA SATA driver floppy.

Alternately, plug your drive into the Promise controller and set the Promise to operate in IDE Mode there in that same section of the BIOS where I had you looking earlier. But I wouldn't use the Promise controller if it were me, I'd use the VIA. The VIA is not crammed onto the weentsy PCI bus, it's up a level on the faster V-Link bus.

I'm your fellow idiot, because I have no manual to go by :D but here's a little tip: the VIA SATA jacks are the two that sit immediately to the right of the motherboard's southbridge. The pair that are down lower on the board are hosted by the Promise controller that is near to them.

Oh, and another way to tell which controller the drive is using is to watch the detection screens. You know how the Promise and VIA controllers show a screen during startup, where they hunt for drives and report what they have hooked up to themselves? If you see your WD GD740 listed on the VIA screen, that means it's on the VIA controller. If you see it listed on the Promise screen, that means... yeah. :)

well it sounds like my expertise is needed for your raptor problem. did somebody call in an elitetechnicalwizard...CUZ THATS ME NIGG@$. alrighty here goes, your first step to solve the raptor problem involves renting the movie jurassic park. the computer animations involved in this movie involve quite graphic movements of the animal called the raptor. you'll need to watch his moves especially in the 18th and 14th scenes of the movie. second, youll need to purchase a WD GD740 4000x series...this is different than what your friend mechBgon suggested. he is a complete silly goose. the problem you have requires this 4000x series due to the fact that i bet you have never touched a girl in your life. you probably watch porn all day and beat off to it you loser. hey you jewb@g im talking to you. go back to loserland and get back to your gt-server. ima hardcore nigg@ fo liffffffffffffe.
