Raptor price after new version?

What do you think the current 36GB raptor's approximate price tag will be after the new and improved 37GB and 73GB versions are released later this month?

It's dropped 15-35 dollars in the past month. It's still a premium part, and I would assume that once it's not top-dog anymore that it would drop in price much more considerably.

I upgraded from a 42xxRPM notebook drive to a new 7200RPM one with an 8MB cache... performance is of course a bit better, but is going to 10,000 going to offer another "ya its a little bit faster but not mind blowing experience" linear speed improvement or because of all the latest improvements is the speed increase more exponential?

Reason I'm asking was because I was planning on upgrading some ATA66 2MB cache 7200RPM Maxtors, and was wondering how much of an impact on price the new drives would have 🙂

From what I hear, the 8MB cache is similiar to upgrading from a 5400 to a 7200, and that 7200 --> 10,000 also shows some nice speed boosts as well. Couple that with the fact that I'm running low on free disk space with little that I want to remove... The question remains... how much will the price probably lower?

No need to pay full price if it's going on clearance next sunday 😉 (or something along that analogy line)

Id imagine there would be no market for it anymore. The new drive is an improvement over an old one. Why would you want an old one?

Just because it's not top of the line doesn't mean it's bad 😉

It's not that money is a major object, just that I don't want to buy something, only to have it drop $20 the next day 😉

Emmm, 20 bucks is nothing man, just buy what you need and be happy.

$20 was just a random number I made up. For all I know newegg could sell them for $50 with free shipping when the new versions come out.

Now, off the topic of "why", back to the question "how much" 🙂

They supposedly come out in late october early november if I remember reading correctly.

As for the price knowing... That's the point of the thread. To discuss that topic.

I don't think there will be a dramatic price drop initally. I think they will decline in price slowly over the first few months of the 73GB drives release. Id guess they will drop maybe $10-$30 upon release of the 73GB raptor and then very slowly drop beyond that. Just my guess though.

I doubt WD will continue to make the "old" version of the Raptor once the second one comes out. I'd watch out for clearances and
<--- those selling their "old" tech for the new. 🙂

Typically, when a new model HD comes out, the old model of the same size remains the same price.

I don't think so because I think they will simply stop making the old one before they make a single new model.

I am moving data from m WD1200JB to my Raptor 36GB *right now*. 🙂 While I realize that it is not solid state, it is pretty nice. Anyway ...

I think the improvements slated for the new model are far more important than the size increase. I want to assume that WD will make an updated 36GB model with all the new technical features and simply stop making the current version. It obviously won't cost as much as the 72GB model, but it will be better than the current, thus demanding a price equivalent or higher than what we see today.

The price of the current model will dip momentarily when the newer one first ships, but will probably rise as supply decreases and folks won't want to pay the initial prices for the updated model.

They'll drop in price. Why you ask? Because I picked up a couple of them a few months back for $130 a piece. Everytime I purchase hardware the price drops right afterward. 😉

Same thing happened a few years back after I spent $3500 on LASIK surgery! 😛

I thought they were releaseing a newer version of the 36GB drive? I would guess the old version would just be phased out though so I would be initially u can find the older versions, but not for long.

Well, a better way of phrasing it is ...

It wouldn't make sense for WD to keep making the "old" 36GB Raptor once the *technology* in the 72GB model is in full production. I want to assume that the 72GB has two platters and that extra platter would be the only thing to distinguish a *new* 36GB and the 72GB.

Thanks for the bump Kristopher 🙂

Robor, go order

*pulls out $700 wishlist*

*yackity yackity yack yack*

and finally, *yack*

after which, I should be able to purchase the exact same hardware for half the price 😛

😉

/hopeless hope.
